This date in History: Nixon elected in '68
Edited on Mon Nov-05-07 06:19 PM by WI_DEM
Very close election between former Vice President Richard M. Nixon, Vice-President Hubert Humphrey and Alabama Governor George Wallace as a third party candidate:

Nixon: 31,783,783 43.4%
Humphrey: 31,271,839 42.7%
Wallace: 9,901,118 13.5%

Nixon's edge in the electoral college was more decisive: Nixon/Agnew carried 32 states with 301 electoral votes. Humphrey/Muskie carried 13 states plus DC for 191 electoral votes. Wallace/LeMay carried five states (all deep south) with 46 electoral votes.

The Democratic ticket carried: New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Maryland, West Virginia, Texas, Minnesota, Michigan, Washington, Hawaii, District of Columbia.

How would have history been changed had Nixon lost?

1. Given the Bush Junta history, you have to wonder how Nixon stole the election!

5. RFK
I always had a feeling that Nixon was involved with his assassination...
Since he would have beat Nixon in 68, and a lot of people dont know that
Nixon had CIA ties during his stint as VP under Eisenhower....:hi:

3. What strikes me here -
is that in a year when the Dems lost most states, they carried *Texas*. Things have certainly changed.

I expect things would have been better if Humphrey had won.

4. They were already moving computers in, plus Wallace assassination attempt ---
and vile attack on Muskie --- !!!

PLUS Nixon worked to try to keep the VN going telling them they'd get a better deal from him than from Humphrey!!!

So -- I'm guess this was another stolen election --- and that history would have been much different --

For one . . . Nixon ARMED right-wing fundamentalist Israel --- !!!!

For another, he corrupted government with Watergate --- setting new trends for the GOP to follow.

You can't be sure what Humphrey would have done --- of course.
I'm not familiar with what support he might have given defense industry ---
but I had hopes for him.
