BUDGET, ULTRALIGHT LAPTOP IS A WINNER
When you mention small, cheap laptops, the One Laptop Per Child device immediately comes to mind.

Designed for third-world school children, the OLPC was supposed to cost just $100, although that price has increased to $200.

That’s why this week’s announcement from Asus is so exciting.

Their Eee PC also is a small, simple laptop which runs on the Linux operating system and is made to sell for just $300 to $400. Since it went on sale, last month in Taiwan, the Eee has been selling like hotcakes.

2. Cheap Linux PCs may Rival One Laptop Per Child
Cheap Linux PCs may Rival One Laptop Per Child

As component prices drop, the aggressive pricing of commercial Linux notebooks could hamper efforts by One Laptop Per Child to supply inexpensive laptops to children in developing markets.

Asus recently shipped its Linux-based Eee PC, and Everex on Thursday said it would soon sell Linux-based PCs with an x86 processor for under US$300. Those competitive prices may draw buyers to commercial laptops over One Laptop Per Chilld's (OLPC's) specialized XO laptops, which will carry a $200 price tag when it ships on Nov. 12, analysts said.

Nigeria buys into $100 laptop concept

The brainchild of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab co-founder Nicholas Negroponte, the OLPC, however, has a competitor: a consortium led by Microsoft and Intel.

The OLPC laptops were initially touted as being priced at $100, but OLPC participants now say the price may fluctuate. In any case, they will be the cheapest ever sold in Africa, and several African countries are going for the idea.

4. I'll get flamed for this, but
hasn't Wal*Mart already started selling a laptop for somewhere between $300 and $400? They've started their Black Friday pricing early this year.

Not sure how good a machine it would be. I'd rather pick up a good used machine and install Linux.
