I will be heartsick if Senator Leahy votes for Mukasey.
I've written and called to register my strong opinion. I'm hopeful that Leahy will not vote to send this nomination to the floor, but I'm concerned that he hasn't said he'll vote no. For years, I've thought that Senator Leahy is one of the good ones in the Senate, and he's done a lot in his time there, but if he votes for Mukasey, there's no way I can support him.

1. It's not like he's never wimped out before
What happened to those subpoenas? What happened to all the papers he insisted in "strong terms" the committee needed to see?

I'm afraid I don't have very much confidence that Sen Leahy actually has a spine, but I'd be overjoyed to be proven wrong.

3. Are you aware of what the process is for a contempt citation?
It takes a floor vote of the full Senate. Leahy doesn't schedule votes like that. And the same goes for inherent contempt. That's hardly his fault. And in his years in the Senate he's shown plenty of spine, from his authoring of the Habeas Restoration Act to the hard hitting hearings he's conducted, the subpoena's he's issued, authorship of the War Profiteering Prevention Act, strong opposition to the war, and much more. You simply discard all that, but provide nothing but the subpoenas- something he has little control over.

4. He's supposed to announce his intentions at 3pm today, per
the bottom of this article. And I agree, I'll also be heartsick. To me that'd be like endorsing torture.

8. the very fact that we have to worry about it is evidence...
...that all this crap about electing dems to have committee control is bullshit. and how will they do on the next supreme court appointee? and how will vermonters or new yorkers vote the next time they're running for re-election? it'll be more of the lesser of two evils, won't it? i swear, this shit gets boring after awhile.

9. if leahy votes to send thisnomination to the floor
I will not support him in the future. but he hasn't done it yet, and he's been an excellent Senator for many, many years. I've never had to view him as a lesser evil.
