Top Legal Adviser (Coffin) To CHENEY Resigns
Cheney Lawyer Is Leaving
November 01, 2007 05:36 PM ET | Permanent Link

The office of Vice President Cheney is saying goodbye to a top-level official. Cheney's office confirmed late today to U.S. News that counsel Shannen Coffin is leaving government tomorrow and will head back into private practice at his former law firm Steptoe & Johnson.

A source says Coffin is expected to take a breather from the rapid pace of government service to spend time with his wife and two small children before returning to private practice after New Year's.

Reached by phone at his office, Coffin declined comment and referred calls to the public relations office.

Coffin joined Cheney's staff in 2005 to fill the position once held by David Addington, who replaced Lewis "Scooter" Libby as chief of staff after his indictment. In that capacity, Coffin has served as the top legal adviser to the vice president.

1. Spending time with the family! BWHAHAHA!
At least that's more believable than "She suddenly got a conscience." I think the first requirement to be legal counsel for Dick "Dick" Cheney is to check your conscience at the door.

3. I thought that coffins stuck around
for the funeral. Maybe dead eye Dick has opted for cremation.

Is Cheney about to 'lawyer up'? Is this today's Friday news dump?

4. You would think by now they could come up with something more original than "more time with the
family". It leaves the impression that government service is so financially rewarding that people can just hang out with the family after resigning and live off the proceeds of government service.

11. I imagine being Dick "Pepper" Chaney's legal advisor would keep one stepping and putting in long
hours. Must take some extraordinary effort to cover up the legal snafus Dickhead gets himself into.

14. Coffin fought to protect Cheney from releasing energy task force documents.

From Think Progress, November 2, 2007:

Today is the last day on the job for Shannen Coffin, Vice President Cheney’s counsel. Coffin joined Cheney’s team in 2005 to replace David Addington. Until mid-2004, Coffin served in the Justice Department and won favor with Cheney when he successfully defended the vice president from having to publicly release documents related to his energy task force.” In 2006, Coffin “told the Secret Service in September to eliminate data on who visited Cheney at his official residence.”

Another one skates off into the sunset, free as a bird.

15. Shannen's a man, baby!
Just to be sure we're all in service to the dichotomous gender rules of our society.

So, will Cheney replace Coffin with Man-sized safe?

17. Cheeknee having a legal advisor...
that is almost an oxymoronic statement.
Why the hell would crashcart even need a
legal advisor since he is above the law?
Or simply ignores the law?
Good riddance to a waste of tax dollars.

"The disclosure by Cheney’s counsel, Shannen W. Coffin, came on the day that the Senate Judiciary Committee had set as a deadline for the Bush administration to turn over documents related to the wiretapping program, which allowed the National Security Agency to monitor communications between the United States and overseas without warrants."

with no other options but their full participation in investigations.
