World Toilet Summit opens in India
Delegates from dozens of nations gathered in India on Wednesday to open a World Toilet Summit aimed at finding low-cost methods to give billions of people access to sanitation.

The four-day meeting and seventh such summit brought 170 experts from more than 40 countries to swap ideas on improving basic sanitation to stem the spread of water-borne diseases that kill millions worldwide annually.

The founder of Indian toilet advocacy charity Sulabh International, Bindeshwar Pathak, opened the meeting by calling for a war footing in the effort to meet 2002 Millennium Development Goals.

The Millennium goals noted that "2.6 billion of the six billion people on the Earth today do not have access to safe and hygienic toilets, and the target fixed was that toilets should be provided to half of those people by 2015 and to all by 2025," Pathak told the delegates.

I used to buck hay for and elderly couple who did not have indoor plumbing until ~ 1964. About 1 year after they had it installed his wife died... It was as if the only thing that mattered in her life was indoor plumbing.....

BTW she made the best dill pickles I have ever had in my life....

4. ...with a nice dip in the lip of the bowl so she doesn't bruise her adam's apple.
It's gonna have to be a pretty big dip.

I think.

figuring out how to flush W and Dick down the toilet - a goodbye cruel world leaders.

5. Why not South Korea? I know a perfect place...
Oct. 19: A luxury hotel shaped like a toilet was built in Suwon, South Korea. It costs about $50,000 to stay there and the proceeds go to help improving sanitation in underdeveloped countries.

Video (from Oddball -- HA!)

6. I lived for almost two years without running water
We had an outhouse. We had a bathtub, but had to heat water to fill it. Pump at the kitchen sink. Made for concious living, as you had to plan everything out. I enjoyed it, for the most part- except the part about going out to the outhouse in 30 below weather.

8. We used to spend summers in Northern Minnesota in the wilderness
Friends had a log cabin on a beautiful lake.
There was a pump for water from a spring, brr-rr, in the kitchen for cooking and washing but you had to go out to the outhouse regardless of the weather. And black bear were active in the area.

Never went up there in the winter, my brother did once.

We took baths in the lake with Ivory soap.
