1. the way things are going now, I would be horribly embarrassed
A species that is obviously more advanced than we are, and has it together enough to fly to other star systems ... they would probably take one look at the mess we've made, and politely leave!

2. Certainly not until the fundy fad is over and the current
administration is on trial for war crimes.

Just like I don't want visitors when my house is messy, I don't want an official alien visit while my country is such a mess.

Involving witnessing to them :eyes:

9. I don't know about that.
I like thinking about Bush as a house pet. Maybe somewhere with a methane atmosphere.

5. Totally.
And I'll put no restrictions like they need to be peaceful or whatever.

It might even be more fun if they were determined to wipe us out.

and if we (Earthlings) survived somehow, I think we'd all drop our differences and learn to get along.

If they were benevolent and came to help but those who come "To Serve Man" (as in the Twilight Zone) can stay in their own galaxy.

7. There would be a lot of religious based violence
Just like that terrorist in Contact.

It would cool if they just visited me, but this country would shit a brick if such a thing actually happened.

33. Well, see the "Disclosure Project"-- there are hundreds of government witnesses
it's pretty hard to believe they are all lying.

Not to mention all the civilian witnesses.

The problem of course is that there is much DISINFO in this topic, and it's hard sometimes to know who to believe. But overall, I think the evidence is overwhelming that they have been here over and over and the government is covering it up.

12. FUCK YES!
Can you imagine a catalyst for change more explosive than concrete evidence that religious systems of 75% of the planet are complete bullshit?

We are not unique and being served by a civilisation advanced millions of years beyond us would put all the garbage humans argue about into some fucking perspective.

18. I'll go with no.
To much uncertainty in any such visit. We might be contaminated be some strange virus, or other. Are they friendly, or do they look to remove, and replace us? It would be fascinating to see them yes, but it's not worth the potential calamity.

Of course you could always argue the other side. What if they came and solved all our problems with magic technology far more advanced than our own.

30. I'm with ya on this one.
My first thought was, how can we assume they're going to be these intelligent, benevolent, friendly beings? They could just as easily be out to exploit us in some way. And I would also worry that they might be carrying some weird contamination or whatever. Even if they did turn out to be friendly, mankind isn't ready for alien contact, anyway. Some redneck would end up shooting one and start a planet war! We've got enough to handle right now with global warming, neo-cons and religious wars, etc. Just call me gloomy Gus.

24. Yes, partly to see what the Fundies would say.
Just like I'm looking forward to seeing evidence of life on Mars.

But I should clarify that I would only want them to visit if they were friendly. I think it's very probably that intelligent life exists in the galaxy and certainly the universe, but the chance that it will make it to Earth seems small. Or, they may have advanced technology that we can't imagine at this point enabling them to travel quickly. Warp drive. :)

26. "Or, they may have advanced technology..."
Of course they would have advanced tech. If they arrived here from another galaxy their tech in many ways, aside from space travel, would be so advanced that we would be overwhelmed. If they weren't friendly, human beings would be in big trouble. We imagine what powers these beings with a civilization a million years older than ours would have, yet our concepts may not even be close to what they posses.

27. Surely they would abide by the Prime Directive.
:)

Naturally, to get here from a distant region of our own galaxy or another galaxy, they would require very advanced space technology. Physics as we know it doesn't allow for faster than speed of light travel, but there are areas of physics we don't know about yet. I doubt we have been visited, but always keep an open mind.

25. Be careful what you hope for.
Every time an advanced technological society has encountered a less advanced aboriginal society (ie. the in situ people) the less advanced people have always fared poorly. This is even the case when the more advanced society has good intentions and doesn't attempt to subjugate or conquer.

The very presence of aliens from advanced civilizations interacting with our culture could change our own in unknown but probably detrimental ways.

Perhaps if they are here, or are at least aware of us, this could be why they haven't made themselves manifest; they may have rules or laws against it.
