'Trusted friend' to nation's farmers nominated as Ag Secretary
Bush Nominates Schafer to Be Agriculture Secretary

President says former North Dakota governor would be a 'trusted friend' to nation's farmers.

President Bush on Wednesday nominated Edward Schafer, a former two-term Republican governor from North Dakota, to head the Agriculture Department. Schafer's confirmation would bring new leadership to the department in the middle of congressional negotiations over a new five-year farm bill. He would replace Mike Johanns, who resigned as agriculture secretary last month to launch a bid for the Nebraska Senate seat being vacated by Republican Chuck Hagel next year.

"At every stage of his career, Ed has shown wisdom, foresight and creativity," Bush said in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. "Those same qualities will make him a valuable member of my Cabinet, and they will make him a trusted friend to America's farmers and ranchers. His passion for agriculture has deep roots."

Schafer gained agricultural experience while serving as governor, from 1992 to 2000, in a state where nearly 25 percent of its residents work as farmers and ranchers or are employed in farm-related jobs.

1. huh?????
The Bush administration has argued that too many farm dollars are directed to wealthy farmers, a position that is likely to put Schafer at odds with Congress as farm interests continue to have considerable influence on Capitol Hill.

What a crock of crapola that line is....The "wealthy farmers" who constitute the Agribusiness in this country are Bush supporters!!

4. OK Wait a minute...Research time..recent news of plagerism,and
check into his failed fish farm business.
Dont recall when it was, close to his gov. election. I believe it cost the State some money to bail it out.
Just had a conversation the other day on DU about Gov Schafer plagerizing.
I'll try to find it..
He's basically a repug wussy.
Not real bright but a perfect underling for Bush.
Just another peanut in the barrel.

6. Thanks for post.
My suspicion started at Bush nominee and then the "friend of farmers" part was over the top.

7. Yep, I hear ya. Schafer's dad started the"Mr Bubble" business
(think it was his dad), the whole family is steeped in Republican goo. Wealthy family an privileged name. Gov Schafer is definately without the backbone to differ w/Bush on anything. He's had a very cushie life.
He's like lukewarm air.
