How screwed up is this?
Rumors have it that someone may be out to "hurt" Tom Brady from the NE Patriots. OK, so let me get this straight...Sports media saying that they are one of the best teams we've seen in years...so someone from another team may deliberately take a cheap shot to disable him? How fucked up is that??? Jealousy leading to violence. Real sportsmanship right???

1. I doubt that will happen. There is an unwritten rule that players don't
go after one another. The real concern is Brady getting injured "normally". That should be the biggest concern.

8. It's kind of the "mutually assured destruction" reason that keeps
them from getting into the whole blatantly cheap shot thing.

15. Jim McMahon would be VERY surprised to hear that there's an unwritten rule
Edited on Thu Nov-01-07 03:08 PM by rocknation
...By 1986 McMahon's reputation as a winner was undisputed, but he was unpopular in many NFL cities due to his sarcastic and pointed comments, and a penchant for candor. He was considered injury-prone and a smart aleck. This negative reputation began to hurt the Bears, as defenders singled McMahon out for punishment on the field.

Before a typically hard-fought contest against the Green Bay Packers in November, Packers defensive lineman Charles Martin proudly displayed a handtowel in warmups with the numbers of Bears stars listed on it, and claimed it was a "hit list" for the game. Martin was allowed to wear the towel in the game, and after a McMahon interception he sauntered over to the quarterback from behind, grabbed him and body slammed him into the rock-hard artificial turf...

Bears players attended to the stunned and injured McMahon as fights broke out and Martin was ejected. The crowd and the Bears players and staff were incensed. McMahon suffered a separated shoulder which ended his season. The enraged Bears defense showed no mercy on the ensuing drive, as the Packers suffered losses on three consecutive plays, then sustained a blocked punt resulting in a Bears touchdown...

A similar scenario occurred in 1988 at New England when a Patriots defender twisted McMahon's knee and ended his regular season. The play was widely held to have been an intentional and illegal act, but no action was taken by the NFL...

16. Yes there is a history of it, and Belichek is pushing the envelope.
Interesting to see what happens. I don't think anyone will allow that type of action to happen and sink to the level of belicheck.

3. It's remarkable that he hasn't already gone down with an injury.
He could easily go down in any game. I think the "rumor" must have been started by some paranoid pats fan.

9. Nahh...
Blame it on the result of taking way too many cheap shots as a kid, or on my love affair with one
of the greatest sports comedies of all time...

6. I guess you don't remember players like..
Conrad Dobler or Mark Gastineau? Sam Huff is always talking about the old days when they were taking cheap shots at Quarterbacks.

7. Screwed
Normally, there is a sort of understanding among teams on proper respect, sportsmanship, etc.

However, given the Pats recent drive to run up the score and humiliate their opponents, normality does not seem to apply anymore.

Football is a very physical and emotional sport. Add a couple of mindless jocks to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.

11. The NE coach has to take some of the blame
He's taken to making a "policy" of running up the score instead of sending in his second stringers because it "proves" that they can win without spying on their opponents. And you're surprised that the opposition might be coming up with consequences?

14. Um, not screwed up at all
He is the QB of a classless and arrogant team. When you are up 38-0, and your starting qb is still in there passing, then you better watch out, cuz somebody is going to be coming for him.

18. Bill Belichick is a cheater who runs up the scores to prove something to the entire league
He is classless and an arrogant jerk. On top of that, in his attempt to stick it to the rest of the league, he is leaving his starting QB in way too long and eventually, somebody may hit Brady and he may get hurt. And that will be all Billy's fault.

19. He's a great coach who's built a great team. No, I'm not
excusing the cheating. That's unsupportable, but he's still a great coach, and Brady seems to be doing just fine, but thanks for your concern. So who's your team?

21. I'm no Pats fan
and I don't think there is a "hit" out on Brady, but I'm pretty sure that if, in the 4th quarter when the front line is tired, a linebacker gets the chance to lay the lumber to Brady, they are going to do it. Or any time. But if he's in there passing the ball again when they are clearly in control of the game, the injury he gets will be on Bellichick.

I realize this isn't Pop Warner, but there is a line where you stop being a "warrior in a sport" and start being a dick. Bellichick has crossed that line.
