Poll question: How likely do you think it is for Dobsonite fundies to split from the GOP?
I was thinking about this while reading the LBN thread about the fundies complaining about Gov. Goodhair insisting he's a Christian when he's Mormon. Will they really split off and form a third party or are they just full of crap?

Are they like the uber liberals who will vote for Kooch in the primary but will hold their noses and vote for the D kicking and screaming? The thing with the Dobsonite crowd is I've heard a number of fundies say things like the Dobsons and Robertsons are out of touch with the average fundie.

As batshit as they are, they're not stupid, and I think Dobson & co. are just posturing in order to put the party on notice: pander to us or else. I seriously don't think they'll risk ceding their considerable control over the party in the name of getting their way. (But I hope I'm wrong.)

1. I think some could cross over and vote for Obama, but
I didn't see that listed as a choice. ;)

4. they'll probably vote, unless it's Guiliani
My parents, for example. My mom is going to vote for the anti-abortion candidate, whoever it is. My dad will vote however the RW radio shows tell him to. It is unimaginable that they would simply not vote--because voting is patriotic, and the Dem is always going to be the scarier option. They are in their 70s and are typical social conservatives.

6. That's what I think
I look at the fundies around here and they are trained to vote R because "Demoncrats are tools of Satan you know" (that's what the teevee preachers say).

What would be really interesting to see is Romney getting the nod. Then they'll fight over who is more Satanic, Democrats or Mormons? :P

5. Highly unlikely.
Their incestuous relationship with the GOP has given them
political power FAR beyond what their tiny numbers justify.
(And wads of $$$, coincidentally...:eyes:)

They aren't gonna walk away from that just because of some
"moral principles" that they never truly embodied.

They may be in a tight spot where their rhetoric meets the road
right now, but I have no doubt that they'll find some convoluted
BS to explain away all the contradictions and continue "business
as usual".

They always have in the past, and "business as usual" is more
lucrative than it's ever been.

7. It's so odd, because I always thought of people like Romney as pretty much the same as the GOP base
It's like we're watching the Reformation, with all the different churches splitting off from each other. Any day now, I expect burnings at the stake to make a comeback.

8. I think a Conservative third party candidate could do very well
you have the following factors -

1. They don't feel like they've gotten much for bush

2. They don't feel like the nominee (unless it's Huckabee, maybe) is supporting their interests.

This is similar to where the left was in 2000 when they ran for Nader.

The only factors that might stop it are the Hillary factor (how much do they hate Hillary (Another reason I hope somebody else gets the nomination), and the Terror factor (how scared to the right wing media factors make them).

10. I agree. That's why I hope either Paul or Brownback runs as a third party candidate.
Either one of them could do well at siphoning votes away from the eventual GOP candidate.

9. The fundies are just like your average college football fan.
Just like when their favorite team wins, they can talk all the trash they want, but when they play a game and lose, nobody cares. As long as Romney's not the front runner, they'll hold their noses and vote for GOP no matter who's running.

12. They'll vote for Judy or Mittens.
Their support will soften, but they'll be out there on account a' them BAYBEEZ.

They know that Judy is officially pro-choice, but that he, like Mittens, will appoint pro-LAFF SCOTUS justices. So most will be ok with that.

14. The split between the pious and the greedy is inevitable
The only question is to the timing. My guess is that the coalition will hold through 2008.

The only question is how long the greedy televangelist crowd will be able to push the gullible around after the election.
