Purging the Diplomatic Corp
Apparently a lot of career diplomats have been complaining that Condi's State Department doesn't "have their back" (MSNBC characterization).

What better way to get rid of the malcontents than by drafting them to positions in Iraq? If they refuse the assignment they can be fired because "they serve at the pleasure" etc etc...

All Condi has to do is start sending deployment letters to the least malleable members, fire them one after the other until they're down to "loyal bushies".

1. Same deal for DOD employees
DOD civilians can get promoted faster if they DEPLOY

Civilian employees at the Defense Department who want to advance might want to get fitted for body armor soon.

The Pentagon plans to start considering service in war zones as “extra credit” for advancement, Patricia Bradshaw, deputy undersecretary of Defense for civilian personnel policy, told lawmakers at a hearing Sept. 18. The department is now updating its career progression systems to include such service, she said.

And the Pentagon particularly plans to consider service in a war zone when it selects and grooms its future civilian leaders, she told the House Armed Services subcommittee on oversight and investigations.

“Forward deployment and being expeditionary has not always been an inherent part of a civilian employee’s opportunity,” Bradshaw said. “As we look for our leadership for the future, we want people who have had these kind of experiences — who’ve actually served with our members and understand what it means to be forward deployed.”

7. Comments from deployed DoD civs
House panel questions benefits for deployed civilians

"Deployment is a condition of employeement for us, and not going, means no job. I have been on approximately 9 deployments to Saudi, Kuwait, Jordon, Afganstan, and Iraq. It is a committment and not really a job to me. Give us the tax break. Also think about some of the retro for past deployments. (since 92)"

6. Here is the problem with purging the professional (non-political) foreign service corps:
These people tested into the foreign service. They met very rigorous academic criteria and passed the foreign service officer test. They cannot be replaced overnight with a Bu$hco political appointment. Morale is bad enough in Condi's State Department. This promises to be a disaster.
