Beck Blames California Wildfires On The ‘Damn Environmentalists’

Last night, CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck blamed California’s massive wildfires on the “damn environmentalists” and their “bad environmental policies.” He also claimed that global warming has nothing to do with the situation, stating, “f I hear global warming one more time, blood is going to shoot out of my eyes.”

To prove his points, he brought on R.J. Smith of the Exxon-funded Competitive Enterprise Institute and Chris Horner, author of the Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism. Horner — who is also a senior fellow at CEI — predictably argued that “lobal warming is not a likely suspect” for the fires and Smith said that “the greens have made things worse by stopping all management.” Watch it:

These claims have been echoed by the right-wing blogs. Michelle Malkin blamed “litigious environmentalists” for “standing in the way” of Bush’s Healthy Forests Initiative (HFI).

In 2002, Bush proposed HFI, which advocated “thinning” forests to decrease the risk of wildfires. But more than anything else, it was an attempt to curry favor with the timber and logging industries, which donated more than $1 million to Bush’s 2000 campaign. HFI allowed loggers to cut down large, valuable trees miles from at-risk communities, allegedly in order to finance the removal of the smaller brush that fuels wildfires.

It begins in childhood, when you're caught with someone else's toy, or a sibling's box of Dots: "Well . . . see . . . uh . . . I didn't steal it, see . . . I . . . ya' know? . . . I was just gonna . . . uh . . . borrow it for . . . uh . . . I was just lookin' at it . . . see?"
We all did it, of course, and were amazed we weren't believed after running out of ways to avoid calling a bird that waddles, quacks and swims a, well, you know, a duck.
But children, being children, generally aren't as creative or as sophisticated in their duplicity as the Orwellian wordmasters in the Bush White House. No, it has become clear to most Americans over the past six years that these folks are unrivaled in their ability to call a duck a bird of paradise, or a plover, or whatever it isn't.
The polluter-friendly Clear Skies Initiative, is a well-known example of this exquisitely refined doublespeak. Or the logger-loving Healthy Forests program.
Would you raise an eyebrow upon hearing the term "extraordinary rendition" if, as intended, you had no idea it was the Bush administration's euphemism for escorting suspected terrorists to be brutally interrogated in countries that,
try as they might, haven't yet attained quite the level of denial, and hypocrisy, that the United States government has achieved with the subject of torture. Or, as the White House would have it, "enhanced" interrogation techniques.
