7. I'm in the San Fernando Valley, in the middle of apartment house hell.
No brush here to burn, lol, just lots of asphalt......

The Malibu fire off to the SW is no threat, though we can see the smoke from it. If the winds were to reverse, it would be cool and foggy and the fire would die. The stuff up north would have to cross the entire valley with its miles and miles of suburbs (no brush), and today is the last day of wind (we hope) so that's not a problem either.

It's so dry I feel sick from the dehydration - can't get enough fluids. They recorded 70 mph winds with 3% (yes, I said 3%) humidity down at Leo Carillo State Beach yesterday. I am getting all flaky and itchy (and I normally have oily skin). We are very lucky in that yesterday is didn't get much over 90, in spite of a 100+ forecast. Today they are saying triple digits FOR SURE. I hope not.

I think it's 7% humidity right now.

9. I have family
near the coast in SD and in Huntington Beach.

They have not needed to evacuate yeat. But as I understand it the embers can fly to any area. So all locations need to stay on alert -- except, of course the asphalt areas. I used to live in one of those down there. I know exactly what you're talking about.

Three digit temps! Ouch.

5. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but are these fires
the worst in the past few decades?

I feel for those people, all because someone was stupid/careless/disgruntled/out for money.

12. Email from a friend of mine in Oceanside (plus, just heard that Camp Pendleton is to be evac'd)
...

At this point we feel safe but they just announced a 'voluntary evacuation' for
our area (south of SR-78 from the coast toward Escondido.)

...

The long story follows so you can stop here if you don't care for the
details.

The fires number up to 11 and the high Santa Ana winds continue which is
expected until tonight with high temperatures and humidity as low as 4%
resulting. The resulting firefighting actions are to get out of its way and
fight some of the left overs as they can. The area effected extends from
Temecula on I-15 south to Ti Juana (TJ) which is approximately 100 miles.

Power is at a premium as SDG&E reports the main 500KVA feeder from AZ is out
as well as 4 - 230 Kva; 3 - 130 Kva; and 11 - 69 Kva lines out of service
from their Chula Vista plant feeding north.

Schools are all closed. Citizens asked not to go work and not cause
problems by being on the highways so more evacuations can be done safely.
I-8 is closed I-15 open from Escondido north to Temecula now but closed
south to border. (among a lot of closures)

A great deal of the details which are lagging can be found by going to
www.signonsandiego.com (SD tribune).

Qualcomm stadium had about 10,000 people last night for one place while Del
Mar Fairgrounds is full with evacuees which now total nearly 300,000 at a
low rough estimate. Many of them have lost homes as more than 1500 homes
are destroyed with one fire near Chula Vista now turning and threatening
2,000 additional.

Airplanes are flying today to help fight fire.

Unbelievable. Looks like the Witch fire will burn to the sea. Channel 8 reports "Major fire burning in what appears to be the La Jolla Indian Reservation, on the North side of Rodriguez Mountain."

watched his own house go up in flames. He was pretty choked up.

20. Wow! Catch that press conf. w/the O.C. Fire Dept? Said that one fire "could have been contained"!
If they'd had enough resources.

And who has cut funding for first responders?

Hmm...gee...could it be.... SATAN??
