Any fires in Mexico?
The Harris fire is burning right on the border. Any wildfires south of the border?

1. Yes, there is one 10-15 miles South of the border,
a fire official in Campo just told me. No word on how bad it is.

Where are you located?

I'm a reporter based in La Mesa

2. Whoa...
I'm in Playas de Tijuana, about a mile and a half south of the border fence, and everything here is smokey and covered in ash. I did not think we actually had fire on this side of the border, though.

Any idea how far from the coast the fire is?

3. No, but Campo is a long ways inland, maybe 50+ miles i'd guess.

5. Potrero is approximately 40 miles east of Playas de Tijuana
It was reported today that the Harris fire had extended over the border into Mexico, near Tecate.

11. I did hear about Tecate...
...but I wasn't clear on whether the fire was on both sides of the border or not.

16. I don't think it's gone very far into Mexico, but the Tecate border crossing is closed.

4. They reported today that the Harris fire has crossed into Mexico, and you can
see the smoke from some fires south of Ensenada, in this satellite photo taken earlier today, which I have added legends to:

7. I am wondering if
development patterns inadvertently fuel the fire. Or does the sweep of the Santa Ana Winds not include Mexico?

9. I don't know about other areas...
...but the wind here in Playas was something else.

It's calmer now, but you can't go outside without getting gritty ash in your eyes, nose, and mouth. It's all over everything.

15. Certain areas seem to be "protected" from the Santa Ana winds.
I live in the Kensington district of San Diego, and there has been very little wind here. Just 15-20 miles to the north, in Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona, etc, the winds were much stronger. The strongest "Santa Ana" winds I have seen are not actually in the city of Santa Ana, but in the area of Fontana, Rialto and San Bernardino. That area is just to the west of a gap in the mountains (south of Mt. San Gorgonio and north of Mt. San Jacinto) which funnels the winds and they just rip through the San Bernardino-Rialto-Fontana area with tremendous force. The central part of San Diego seems to be in a "shadow area" which never receives the full force of the winds. But the outlying areas certainly do. Northern Baja California may have a different pattern of mountains, lacking the gaps, and that range of mountains may "shield" that area from the strongest winds. My guess...

17. Kensington is lovely.
My daughter and I lived in Normal Heights for a few years before she went up north for school. :)

18. Yes, I'm very lucky to get to live here. My grandparents
bought the house I live in for $7,200 in 1938.

19. Wow.
I moved to Mexico when 2-BR condos started going for $250K in Normal Heights. I have a little house here for less than half of what I was paying for rent up there. You are very, very lucky!
