Money gone, Iraqi refugees forced to go home
...or as Bushco will put it: "Many good Iraqi citizens are now returning to their homes. This would indicate that the level of violence is subsiding. And so, our stratergy is working. God bless Murika".

Many reluctantly leave safe-havens of Syria, Jordan to return to 'death row'

"DAMASCUS, Syria - Their money gone, Iman Faleh and her family packed their belongings to reluctantly return to Baghdad — a journey they said was like going to "death row."

The religiously mixed family — Iman is a Sunni Muslim, the others are Shiite Muslims _ fled their home in a mostly Shiite part of east Baghdad in July and took refuge in Syria, joining an estimated 1.5 million other Iraqis here.

But in early fall, they became part of a growing wave of Iraqis leaving Syria for home, not because they are confident of Iraq's future, but because they ran out of money.

Others are returning because the Syrians have made it more difficult to stay. Most Iraqis cannot work legally in Syria and survive on savings or handouts from relatives.

"Going back to Baghdad means going to `death row,'" said Iman's 27-year-old son, Zaid, as he hauled luggage from the family's US$1,200-a-month apartment in Damascus. "But we have no money left that could allow us to go on living here."

1. I wonder if any of us can appreciate the depths of despair . . .
of these people, and in fact of the entire Iraqi population . . . all caused by an illegal invasion and occupation that just goes on, and on, and on, with no end in sight . . .

5. America brought thousands of Vietnamese to America to escape their plight
Why have we not brought a single Iraqi to America?

6. I was wondering if situations such as this were happening
Naive me, I use to think that refugee camps were free or almost free until a previous article brought up the fact that refugees in Syria and Jordan have to pay their own way. The other article also mentioned that visas to those countries are only being granted for short periods of time to Iraqi refugees.

No wonder most Iraqis have chosen to stay in Iraq even though they are in serious danger.
