Apple Hard At Work Making iPhone Obsolete
CUPERTINO, CA—Only a month after the much-heralded announcement of the iPhone, Apple CEO Steve Jobs confirmed that his engineers were already working around-the-clock on the touchscreen smartphone's far-superior replacement. "We looked at innovative user interface, the paradigm-shifting voicemail, the best-in-class mobile browser, and we realized we could make all that seem ridiculously outdated by the time the product becomes available to customers in June," said Jobs, who described the project as "Apple reinventing the iPhone." "When the second-generation iPhone comes out this fall, we want iPhone users to feel not just jealous, but downright foolish for owning such laughably primitive technology." Jobs also hinted that the second iPhone device would not be compatible with existing Mac computers, third-party peripherals, or any future Apple products.

2. It's from The Onion (so supposed to be a joke)
They are mocking the fact that the iPod is often replaced by a "better" model every few months or so.

4. This bit of parody has everything down perfectly!
It involves Apple, rapidly advancing technology, geek factor, envy. The Onion does it again.

*disclaimer: I plan on purchasing an iPhone when it's available, knowing full well that it will be eclipsed by another phone within a year.

5. Know what the scary part is?
I didn't look at the Onion link right away, and until I got to the part where Jobs is saying he wants the first buyers to feel foolish, it had me going.

Of course, it's all too true: by the time technology actually makes it to the market these days, it's already obsolete because the manufacturer and its competitors have been working around the clock in the meantime to make sure they don't get left in the dust.

It's enough to make you want to go out and buy a car, which at least doesn't begin to depreciate until it leaves the lot.

6. Very true!
That's why I try not to get buyer's envy - and I rarely go for bleeding edge technology. I used to build my own PCs using components that, while not past their prime, definitely weren't the most recent releases. When I bought my Power Mac, it was a dual-core 2.3Mhz machine - not the hot Quad, and it's served me well for over a year now (and probably will for quite a few more). When I bought my iPod, it was the 3rd generation (and of course, the 4th generation was released a month later). I'm still waiting on a new TV, I figure by the time I actually buy, a 40" LCD or 42" plasma will be down to what I'm comfortable spending. I didn't get a cell phone until I absolutely needed one for work.

8. 2nd tier is the way to go!
Bleeding edge is for techno-snobs with too much money.
