Clarence Thomas... what a man!
That's the email I just got from my mother. Yikes!

"I want to go get Clarence Thomas's book. I heard him interviewed on the radio. What a man!"

She also still thinks Bill O'Leilly is "a good and honorable man."

How can we possibly be related?!? My dad has sworn that I'm not adopted....

4. He is the most conservative justice on the Supreme Court
Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 08:10 PM by still_one
He is an advocate of the Federalist Society, and is for moving most things, INCLUDING CIVIL RIGHTS down to the state level

Obviously your folks must not have any need for the Constitution. I highly recommend you have the read the book The Nine if they want to get some insight on these judges.

Pray tell what substantive thing impressed your Mom about him?

7. My dad can no longer participate.
His dementia is very bad at this point. However, he was always much more liberal and reasonable than mother.

Mother and I do NOT discuss anything political because it inevitably leads to an ugly clash. If I disagree with anything at all that she says, she considers it a personal attack. Thus, I've learned to just let these little comments of hers slide by and change the subject.

I have no idea what radio show she heard Clarence interviewed on (probably either O'Reilly or Limbaugh, as she listens to both) or what he said that so impressed her. I could ask, but that would likely open up a whole new (or old) can o' worms between us, best left alone.

9. I am extremely sorry about your father. If she reads, or will listen to an audio book
The Nine is an unbiased look at all the justices

I don't know if she's up for it, but maybe I'll get her the audio book anyway. :)

21. That's just it. She doesn't.
We are at such opposite extremes that we learned long ago to avoid the subject if we want to get along on any other level. She doesn't see disagreement as merely disagreement, but as a direct and very personal attack. I'm still baffled that she brought this up at all.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'll just get the book to read for myself. :)

6. My laymans take on genetics
is that daughters seem to inherit more from the father than the mother and vice a versa. Maybe that has something to do with it? But I am curious to hear your further thoughts on it. :)

I was only speaking in very general terms of course. In my case, I think I got some from both, I was probably pretty fortunate that way. I'll spare you any details on my shortcomings. ;)

25. Did she see/hear him on 60 Minutes last week?
He is a sad little man. (He does not strike me as a person of stature)

Very bitter and angry person.

He feels his fame was "given" to him because of affirmative action, and therefore he thinks such systems should be dismantled.

And when I thought about it..if he was having such a hard time with the Yale Law degree, why did he consent to the SCOTUS nomination?

The podcast is available on iTunes.
