Email war with repuke co-worker. You won't believe this.
Direct quote copied & pasted:

"Teacher Unions Drive up the cost of education. Mostly because of Special Education. The real value in special education is providing assistance in math, reading and writing skills for kids that need extra help. That is giving a little assistance to the C or D student to help them achieve. The problem with SPED is that there are factions out there that want to educate Downs Syndrome kids to develop them into CEO’s. It’s not realistic. They need basic skills to be productive citizens."

1. Some of the CEO's lately
make Downs Syndrome kids look fully functional. Or better yet look at shrub and his cohorts.

"The Downs Syndrome SPED project was disbanded in 2001 after the first recipient of the program somehow ended up in the White House."

He told me I'm full of hate. :eyes:

11. That...
is an EXCELLENT response. (Although, from my own experience, I'm not sure that's entirely fair to those individuals with Downs Syndrome - the people I've known who had that particular affliction have been generally very kind, sweet, and helpful individuals, which is a hell of a lot more than can be said about the current occupant of the White House.) :eyes: And yeah, we're totally the ones "full of hate." Maybe you should tell him he's full of something else that has four letters? ;)

Comparing Our Leader to kids with somthing extra is a great disservice to those people, imho. Our Leader hasn't the slightest chance of being anywhere near as kind and caring as most of the people I've met with Down.

I can see Dubya being in SPED, no doubt at a time under GOP leadership with no funding. Proof that it doesn't stand a chance of helping kids who need it with the Republics in office!

3. that's just ridiculous.
But if you wanna bug the coworker - tell him that Bush's form of NCLB requires schools to have Special Ed kids test AT GRADE LEVEL in math and reading - and expects schools to have all of their students (including all Special Ed students) pass grade level tests by 2011. So the 'faction' pushing what s/he is decrying is... drum roll... BUSHCO.

Ironic, eh.

7. Mr. Ourblue is a veteran special ed teacher...
in 12 years he has had ONE downs syndrome kid who's mother insisted that she be ready for college. drove the teachers absolutely nuts, never mind her poor kid who would get so frustrated she'd pull her hair out of head at times. All she wanted was to be with her peers. that mother was the only "faction" out there in 12 years.

anyways, teachers unions themselves have little to do with special education policy.

also, if a kid is getting c and d's and doesn't have a learning handicap, he or she is just an underachiever, poor and simple. you can lead a horse to water but ya can't make them drink.

9. I taught special ed as a substitute, and the program they receive
is superior to that of "mainstream" classrooms as the kids learn when they are ready to understand the concepts, not according to a weekly progress planner that can't deviate from its schedule. On the whole, the kids are very happy and really like school.

The author of the e-mail is unaware of public schools, special education (which is state-mandated), or teachers' unions. If municipalities had their way, teachers would be making $15,000 per year, without benefits, and would have to pay for their own supplies. And the parents would have to send their kids to private schools at a greater cost as the best minds would not be teachers.

15. HAHAHA. I LOVE this line.
The problem with SPED is that there are factions out there that want to educate Downs Syndrome kids to develop them into CEO’s.

Parents who have children with Down Syndrome (and tell your freeper co-worker it is Down Syndrome, not Downs Syndrome) are begging for services in all parts of the country.

Down Syndrome children need all kinds of special education, like occupational therapy and physical therapy and speech therapy and a lot of them don't get it.

CEO's?

18. May the author of that note roast in hell. By the way, the money
that is now used in schools for all children with disabilities was previously used to keep people in institutions so IF we stop educating these children in schools the money will stop coming to schools and go back to other care facilities. So few recognize that fed money for special education is extra above the usually school subsidies.

21. CEOs? Easy.
The problem is educating them to the point of being functioning citizens. That's tougher, but it can and must be done.

22. Having worked in Special Ed for almost ten years, allow me to characterize your co-worker...
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 03:24 PM by Union Thug
He's a dimwitted piece of shit; unbelievably stupid.

Special ed kids and those that work with them are the most undervalued human beings in the school system. With that said, at WHS, where I spent a few years, we had a GREAT program for these kids that involved an in-house recycling program and a community outreach program. The program was appropriate to their capacity, dignified, and integrated them with the community (we had the best group of peer tutors that elected to become part of the program - what wonderful, caring, compassionate teenagers - beautiful kids!). We also sponsored a WHS special olympics team.

It was great! We were able to bring a little joy into the lives of these kids and help them acclimate appropriately to the community in which they lived.

Your co-worker is a moron and can go straight to hell.
