American Chief frozen patties recalled
Sam's Club has recalled 'American Chief' Angus Beef Patties that are suspected to be the cause of e-coli sickness for four children in the Twin Cities of Minnesota area.

The patties were distributed by Cargill Inc in Wayzata, Mn but some of the processing is done in Wisconsin. A lot of the same food sold by Sam's Club is also sold at a lot of the WalMart Super Stores. So everyone with the American Chief patties should check them. They had a sell by date of Feb 08.

Minnesota Health Department is checking into the plant to see if the contamination came from there.

What is it going to take for Americans to not be afraid to bite into food anymore.

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 6 (UPI) --

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has recalled American Chef's Selection Angus Beef Patties
after four children were sickened with E. coli infections in Minnesota.

The national recall issued Friday pertains to any of the beef patties bought from
any Sam's Club after Aug. 26, the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported Saturday.

International food maker Cargill Inc., based in Minneapolis, makes the patties sold
at Sam's Club, which is owned by Wal-Mart.

From the link provided above:

"There was no evidence the Minnesota E. coli outbreak was related to the national recall of nearly 22 million pounds of frozen hamburger from Topps Meat Co. The New Jersey-based Topps announced Friday it is closing after 67 years because of its recall, the second-largest in U.S. history."

3. Is this different than the recall in NJ yesterday?

The one that forced the company out of business?

I'm already developing a minor food phobia. I can't really think of any food product that I fully trust except the tomatoes in my own garden. I've stopped shopping at Asian markets, which sucks because I love cooking Chinese food.

7. Meat is contaminated at the packing house during the slaughtering process.
Nobody is "shitting in our food" per se. Some bacterial contamination is inevitable during slaughter. Meat for sale is not and cannot be expected to be STERILE. The amount of contamination CAN be controlled by slowing down the line speed in the plants.

The bad bacteria don't live in the gut of healthy, properly fed (grass-fed) beef. The feedlot practices have created the problem.

8. But Topps didn't slaughter the animals, they only packed it.

I suspect unclean machines and possibly lack of hand washing by workers, among other things.

11. I suspect cross-contamination. Maybe a single contaminated batch
of ground meat plus inadequately cleaned equipment between batches.

This DIDN'T come from a human not washing after using the bathroom. E coli O157H7 doesn't originate in people. It's a cattle bug.

6. How do these companies get so BIG? Why can't Americans learn to,
at the very least, form their own hamburger patties (it's so simple a 4-yr-old could do a passable job). Better yet, grind your own hamburger rather than buying pre-ground.

When will people learn that letting others prepare your food for you in some far-away place run for profit is NOT SMART????

9. Some of that meat etc. is also in TV dinners etc.
Topps had over 25 products recalled, not just preformed burgers.
