This country obviously needs to have a serious discussion.....
If causing pain or psychological trauma to a captive is not torture then what is? The debate needs to be either: I support torture and here is why... Or I don't support torture and here is why... Did I miss anything?

Maybe the 'debate' needs to be framed as simply as 'since we torture, can we call ourselves civilized?'

It's like debating whether there's such a thing as climate change. Torture is wrong. Everyone knows it's wrong. That's why bushco tried to hide it.

4. Bush would like that. He'd claim a debate on torture was proof of America's freedom

and democracy in action. And a debate on torture would also deflect from the fact that Bush is already torturing people and attempt to frame it as a question. A debate on torture would also allow some to pretend all America needs is yet another law - that won't be enforced - outlawing torture The question of torture has long been settled. It's wrong - and it's illegal. It's a war crime.
