My Breaking Point
Source: whatever

I was so disturbed by Dubya's veto of the SCHIP bill, I wrote letters to the editors of my local, regional, and the New York freaking times, let's see if any get published. I want your feedback, please. And yes I use my name, because I am not afraid of these bastards.

No link yet.

Chutzpah:

The definition of this word derived from Yiddish actually means:

1. unmitigated effrontery or impudence; gall.
2. audacity; nerve.

This is the only way I can describe our current president after today vetoing the SCHIP bill that would have added 8 million children from working class families to a successful program. After careful thought I can only think of one reason he would do such a thing: He doesn't care about us. Period.

That may not seem to be a bold statement to some of you, but when you think about it, the SCHIP issue really brings his personality to the fore. He would rather young kids go without health insurance in order to make a point about "socialized medicine.".

George W. Bush waited 6 years to veto his first bill, and that veto was to ban stem cell research, a controversial decision indeed, but one that still considers careful thought as these cells are from frozen embryos that will be discarded in any case, so why not use them to solve medical problems such as spinal cord injuries, Althzheimers, etc., the possibilities may never be known as long as we have someone so limited in intellectual scope as our current leader making policy that regards science as a dark age intrument that should never be used even when proven to be useful.

His other vetoes have to do with funding for this fiasco of a war that he started under false pretenses. Our Commander-In-Chief has no problem spending billions of dollars a week to continue a war that does not make us any safer in the world; has created more enemies than friends, we are now looked upon as an occupying force, and have lost most of the allies that we have counted upon in years past. You cannot change a country that has thousands of years of history frought with conflict amongst themselves. We cannot force Democracy on these people, no more than we would want someone to come over here and force their ideals upon us.

I thought long and hard about writing this letter, and there are many points I have left out because I feel you have all heard them before, but seriously, how could an honest man deny health care to children in his own country while spending billions of dollars fighting a war and even threatening to expand the war to another country (Iran) which could result in World War III.

I have been watching Ken Burns' "The War" about World War II and I am so dismayed by the leadership we have these days as compared to the brave men in both the military and the political theater from those days. I sometimes wonder what FDR or Truman would have to say about our current situation. I can only imagine and my imagination tells me they would not be kind words.

World War II was as the documentary states "A Necessary War" - the war we are currently involved in is not. It is a contrived war, a war that was sold to us with false pretenses, a war that every step of the way the reasons for staying there change, from a "imminent threat", to the search for the WMD's that were not there, to "establishing a democracy" with a people who have never tasted it or wanted it for that fact, all the people in Iraq know is that things there are worse off than before we got there. They have no power most of the time. They cannot go out into the streets without fear of being killed. They live in squalor conditions and in constant fear. Is this what we want?

I think I have a better idea:

Spend money on our kids. Spend money on our kids health care. Spend money on our kids education. Let's make sure our kids feel safer about their environment.
I grew up in the 60's -70's and I have fond memories of my childhood, times were much simpler then, but one thing was common: We were America, we stood for good in the world, other countries may have been envious but they admired us and looked up at us for those things. We have lost all that we have gained by acting as a Colonial power, we must return to what has made us a great country.

This is what us normal Americans want.

And, by the way, bring our troops home.

Sincerely,

Gregory S. Fulton
