Are there any "vulnerable" repugs that voted against SChip?
Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 06:03 PM by annabanana
We only need, I think 7 more votes in the House to override that damn veto..

Here's a link to the house vote.. Anyone know any of these (R) "nays" that might not be 100% secure?

1. Knollenberg in Michigan is vulnerable - right wing SOB who voted no
Knollenberg is an undistinguished representative who has represented wealthy and populous Oakland County for many years. It was traditionally Republican, but it's turning blue rapidly. Knollenberg has always voted the party line, and he is definitely vulnerable. This will be used against the old SOB, and I think it just may boot his sorry ass from the House.

7. The $83k figure was only for New York
because of its high cost of living. It wasn't applicable across the country. Even a cursory reading of the legislation would clue one into that.

13. I already do know a bit
There are plenty of reasons to veto the bill. Regarding the incomes of who would be covered- did I somewhere say it would cover people making $83,000 in Mississippi? No, I did not.

For one thing- attaching a tax to a shrinking pool of people- smokers, is not the smartest way to fund any program, whether it's for tanks and bullets or for cuddle puppies.

Can you provide a link on the $80,000 qualification issue? Does this depend on someone being in an extremely high cost of living area with several children? I'm not saying that' the answer. I'm just wanting more information....with links.

Thanks

33. There are numerous places to find
facts regarding SCHIP at cato's website. I don't have a specific page saved in my bookmarks. Heck, there's very little in my bookmarks. In all honesty, my hope is that some of you guys will actually take the time to read about SCHIP (and possibly Medicare and Medicaid) by visiting the Cato Institute's website instead of just grazing through a specific link to see that roughly 9 out of 10 kids in the upper tier of would be covered with this expansion have insurance. Kids in households making $50,000? No. That wasn't my claim from the start. Kids at the upper portions of the expansion? yes.

Ends = health care for kids who couldn't have it without SCHIP.

Means = providing tax dollars for that most excellent cause.

I call this a win-win situation.

28. slow down
I'm trying to read the bazillion people who hate me because I think it's not the govt's (read: yours and mine) responsibility to provide health insurance to people, particularly when the state and federal govts are the number 1 reason health insurance is so expensive.

I recommend reading some of www.cato.org
They have several things on SCHIP throughout their site. A few articles and some podcasts. BTW, they are against the Iraq War before thinking they are some GOP site.

I want you to actually go to their site. I don't have lots of bookmarks period, let alone have ones bookmarked specifically in preparation before I start a conversation. Go read a little. You might learn something. You'll find the info you are looking for if you are willing to look through some stuff that doesn't automatically put a rubber stamp on your predetermined ideology (I used to be a Democrat, but Independent leaning Libertarian now)

The Cato Institute has no credibility here. I drive past it every day on my way to work and always wonder at the hypocrisy. The Cato Institute, had it existed in the 1850s, would have been a bulwark in support of eternal slavery. Please take your views elsewhere. You are on the wrong site.

Everyone can flame me all they want,I just think there is a lot of waste most likely more than enough to pay for healthcare for everyone.Think of the money business would save may even lower unemployment rates.Think of the lower income people that might get off welfare and go to work alot of people are so scared of losing medicaid that they won`t get a job. Most employers don`t offer health insurance even if you do have insurance most can`t afford the 20 percent copay.
