2. wow, is this a misleading post
here's the real date:

Clinton (D) 50%, Giuliani (R) 44%
Clinton (D) 50%, Thompson (R) 43%
Clinton (D) 53%, Romney (R) 38%
Obama (D) 46%, Giuliani (R) 45%
Thompson (R) 47%, Obama (D) 45%
Obama (D) 50%, Romney (R) 38%
Edwards (D) 48%, Giuliani (R) 43%
Edwards (D) 49%, Thompson (R) 39%
Edwards (D) 52%, Romney (R) 33%

my read on that is in the three head to heads, both Hillary and Edwards whip the GOPers, what's this total margin of victory stuff? you would also say that in every poll, Hillary is over 50%, while Edwards is only over 50% in one poll.

3. It is not misleading at all....
In 2 out of 3 races Edwards holds the Repub candidate to 39% or less. Hillary only does that once.

It all depends on what you concentrate on.

The "total margin of victory" has been used by pundits who actually look at these numbers.

Edwards has consistently beaten the Repub candidates by a larger margin of victory than Clinton or Obama. Check the Iowa and New Mexico polls if you do not believe me.

4. larger margin, but larger number of undecideds
48% doesn't win, 51% does.

Better headline: Hillary above 50% against two of three republicans in Virginia.

would you rather be at 48% or 51%?

5. I'd rather WIN with the larger margin of victory just like Bill Clinton did....
And 48% does win in Presidential Elections as long as you are the highest vote getter.

Gotta know your history ....

6. this isn't a national poll
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 11:12 PM by northzax
it is a state poll. none of them took third parties into account, so if you pull 48% in a two way race, you lose (kinda by definition, if there are two candidates, and one gets 48%, the other snagged 52%, right?)

oh, and you should know your Virginia rules as well. as for history, name a single state won by either Bush or Kerry in 2004 with a plurality of the votes, rather than a majority.
