"An Inconvenient Truth" Star Gore Plans Oscar Night Speech
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 12:29 PM by NYCGirl
I'm watching the Oscars this year!

From the Hollywood Reporter Blog:

http://reporter.blogs.com/risky/2007/02/an_inconvenient.html

When and if An Inconvenient Truth wins the best feature documentary Oscar, two people are allowed to go up onstage, including the director, and only one is supposed to speak. According to director Davis Guggenheim, if the movie wins, he will go up with Al Gore—who will give the acceptance speech. Paramount Vantage chief John Lesher reminds that Academy rules dictate that only those who have seen all five docus can vote, so nothing is assured. But I have a hunch that those few hundred Academy members will want Gore to give that speech to that HUGE global audience.

Edited to add quotation marks to the movie title in the thread title.

1. It makes me cry--literally, right now--
to read this and think of the world we might now be living in if things had gone differently in 2000.

I just burst out crying when I thought of Gore talking to the world. It should have been like that for the past 7 years. I can't wait to hear his message.

Oscar parties? :toast:

8. The first time I saw "Fahrenheit 9/11" in a theater (saw it twice), I burst into tears
at the opening scene with Al and Tipper ("Was it only a dream?"). My friends looked over at me like I was nuts. And, BTW, I never stopped crying during the film.

16. Same here
So, if anyone saw "Fahrenheit 9/11" at the Town Center (KC) at the June 25, 2004 7:15 p.m. showing and heard muffled whimpering throughout the movie, I apologize. (I've got the ticket stub on my "wall of memorabilia in located in front of me.)

6. as long as the MSM allows it
best docu could be relegated to the awards given "off camera" - like "best film made by redheaded girls"

5. I'm with you on that.
As Molly Ivins said "Just when you thought there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the two parties, the Republicans go and prove you're wrong."

Frankly, I always knew there was a difference, but I think the R's have removed all doubt for anyone with an ounce of a brain?

7. Thanks for posting NYCGirl
This will be the first time in years that I will watch the Oscars. I love Jon Stewart but I still refused to watch last year. I got the good clips off of the internets (with help from the google). But, I will watch the Oscars this year just so I can see Al talk to the world (and invite them to his concert for global climate change awareness).

12. can you imagine the ovation from the audience
they will be standing and cheering if Al gets up there. The audience of people like Clooney, DeCaprio, Damon, possibly Tim Robins and Susan Sarandon, Spielberg, Katzenberg, etc. The ovation could go on for some minutes before he speaks.

15. Given the other films nominated in this category watching all five will be a big test for wingnuts!
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 01:49 PM by calipendence
I'm guessing that most of those that watch all of these documentaries will be more of the sentiment of seeing this film winning, and will also sense the truly heavy importance of having it win, and perhaps helping launch Al Gore's campaign to rescue America and the planet!

I'm also hoping for him to get his future campaign theme song of Melissa Etheridge's ("I Need to Wake Up!) also winning too! Someone else pointed out that with three of the other song entries all being from "Dreamgirls", that they will most likely split their support amongst them where if only one were nominated it might have been the heavy favorite.

17. I love that song and video
My husband uses it as his daily inspiration. I would love for Melissa to win for her song. It is so powerful.

"I Need to Wake Up" and Neil Young's "After the Garden" would both make excellent campaign videos.

27. Here are the lyrics:
Have I been sleeping?
I’ve been so still
Afraid of crumbling

Have I been careless?
Dismissing all the distant rumblings

Take me where I am supposed to be
To comprehend the things that I can’t see

Cause I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

And as a child
I danced like it was 1999
My dreams were wild
But the promise of this new world
Would be mine
Now I am throwing off the carelessness of youth
To listen to an inconvenient truth

Well I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

I am not an island
I am not alone
I am my intentions
Trapped here in this flesh and bone

And I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

I want to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

18. I am kinda hoping for Gore/Obama
I think he will be ready after Gore. Both have a vision. First we need to start on the vision of saving the planet and ending this war. Then can continue with Obama on his visions.

Can't wait for Oscar night. We throw a party every year. It'll be another raucous, irreverent affair. Guarantee you - you'll be able to hear a pin drop when Al gets up to speak, though.

25. I've written this before, but have to repeat it
I have this fantasy that he goes up there and after thundering applause makes a short acceptance speech, but the crowd starts chanting "run Al run" - he pauses, starts the usual 'I appreciate the sentiment but..", stops himself, sort of looks at the ceiling for a few seconds, then blurts out in that mock-petulant tone "oh all right!"

talk about a show-stopper!

Of course he wouldn't do it, but isn't a delightful pipedream?

26. A Chance To Talk To The World About Our Responsibillity And Announce July Concerts
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 06:32 PM by RestoreGore
If he does get to go on stage I hope he will tell the global audience he will have that it is time to take action on this urgent crisis. He will have the world stage to tell people who may not even know this movie was made to see the truth and to join in becoming part of mitigating this crisis.

The CO2 that has been accumulating in our atmosphere for hundreds of years is now causing affects that will be felt for hundreds of years to come on a scale that will be catastrophic if we do not join together as a world community with rich and developed countries leading the way to cut the amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases we are emitting into it our atmosphere.

I hope he uses the platform he would have to speak about our MORAL obligation as humans not only to this our only home, but to other species who are feeling the affects of this planetary emergency as well.

AIT was the culmination of all he has been warning about for thirty years that was ignored by those who now find his words prescient. Hopefully now they will follow through by listening to those words by doing their part for their planet.

To see him facing the world to finally speak of this urgent message that has been his heart for so long will be very emotional for me, because the environment has been my heart since I was a young girl, and I couldn't be prouder that this good man now speaks as our global environmental ambassador. That would be one of the defining moments of his life which will hopefully inspire more people into becoming better stewards of our planet. Good luck to AIT!

And it would be the perfect opportunity to announce the climate change concerts slated for July!
