Obama's Fuzzy Math (UPDATED)
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 05:46 PM by patrioticintellect
https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/eoq3matchee?match_campaign_id=3

Here's the goal: 500,000 donations to this campaign from 350,000 people by midnight on September 30th.

How exactly do 350,000 people make 500,000 donations? Are you requiring people to donate two or three times in this period that's less than a month? Who are these people who support you? Are they financially capable of doing this, Barack? Is this your idea of grassroots funding of a candidate such as yourself?

*******How can you be anti-war when you are committed to 100,000 more troops in Iraq? Yet another instance of fuzzy math.*********************

13. So Barack is only capable of securing somebody to match 150,000 of the 350,000 donations?
I thought he'd have more corporate and special interest money to match his supporters' donations.

2. You know if you asked nicely, maybe someone would calmly explain.
As it is, even if I made the effort to recall how that math works, I wouldn't reward this kind of petty cheap shot making.

16. Excuse me, which cheap shots would those be?
I've made some comments on this board in response to cheap shots on Obama, but I really don't care for going after Hillary as a candidate, as she is obviously much beloved by Democrats at large. So, I don't know what you're talking about.

4. Has there ever been a more transparently deceitful thread in the history of DU?
The answer is in the very next sentence, like waterman said.

11. As I said downthread, it is not fuzzy math. It's a way of maximizing impact.
And that's beside the point of the matching contributions.

Make a Donation Now and Double Your Impact
We're facing a hard deadline in less than a week. The financial reports filed after September 30th will set the tone for the last 100 days before people start voting and caucusing.

The numbers will be a signal to voters in the crucial early states that our movement has the support it takes to win.

So let's go.

Here's the goal: 500,000 donations to this campaign from 350,000 people by midnight on September 30th.

If you give right now, someone who has already given to this campaign will match your donation.

9. Well, it isn't fuzzy math. It's just a way of getting a half a million donations
from slightly more than a third of a million people. Affording isn't an issue--say, you decide to give the guy twenty bucks. You give him ten bucks, twice.

It's a way of making the impact feel bigger, and when you do that, you can 'grow' your bandwagon of support. Gee, he got HALF A MILLION contributions!!!! Maybe I should contribute, too!!!!!

It's actually clever, though they should have skipped that sentence you cited -- it's clumsy, and makes it obvious what they're trying to do. They'd have been better off getting bloggers and other actors to put the word out in smaller venues.

35. They all do it. Even the 'eschewers' do it by simply eschewing, and playing the
"I'm purer than you are" game.

He's not really manipulating the numbers, he's simply magnifying the momentum. It's a tactic to generate interest and enthusiasm.

Politicians need to get noticed to get their message out. Whatever works for them, I guess.

22. I was legitimately seeking to understand Obama's system for donations
Let me tell you how Kucinich is handling it.

He has set a goal and asked supporters to help him meet it. There's no 350,000 for 500,000 or 1 million donations divided by 2,000 or 5,000 times 10,000 plus some money from here. No. It's simple. If you can donate, donate.

Richardson on the other hand demands $80 dollars NOW! because he is 800,000 dollars short. And that is what you will give if you support him.

32. At least my candidate...
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 08:12 PM by patrioticintellect
...never allowed the disenfranchisement of black voters to go ignored or not remedied.

Look, I realize how it could be seen as cheap but think about this...I just boosted support for Obama! And I knew I was going to! So why throw a cheap shot that involved a link to his donation page? That would be stupid.

I really was seeking to understand his donation plan and not deliver cheap shots until people like you plunged this thread downward to the lowest level possible.

To all Kucinich supporters out there, you tell me that the 350,000/500,000 thing doesn't seem "funny"? Should I expect a report on OpenSecrets.org?
