To the DUer's not living in Pacific time, could you please not
post results of things like who won a particular grammy (or a movie award, like in the Oscars) in your subject line?

I know it isn't the end of the world or anything if you do, but it kind of spoils the surprise for those of us who hadn't seen a particular show yet.

Thank you.

:hi:

1. Sorry, but telling people not to, will not stop it
If you really....really don't want to know,
you have to stay off the boards until the event is over.

This board moves fast and people don't see your post.

Truth and reality...why do people hate it so?

What else do you find "offensive". How bout the Pacific Coasters show some smarts and initiative and if they do not want to know, avoid DU for a few hours.

5. Amazing, isn't it? The much reviled MSM recognizes TIME ZONES
but a number of alleged progressives on DU are just plain rude about the fact that the rest of the world doesn't operate on their schedule.

Want to have friends in Australia give a few US east coasters a wake up call. ;) Time zones are not that hard for most to fathom. Some need wake up calls.

18. human nature being what it is-
the best/only way for you to ultimately avoid being non-surprised, is to refrain from reading du until those award shows being broadcast live except on the west coast & which you're interested in watching are over where you are.

if you really want to be sure, that is.

personally, i don't watch/pay attention to any of them, except the oscars- and when i'm watching, i'm not posting, and afterward i maybe watch the news and go to bed- so it's not me doing any of the spoilings.

24. I know that posting spoilers in subject lines will happen sometimes.
Tonight, though, I saw so many threads about who won what. I just wanted people to think about it first (thought I realize that the excitement that certain grammy wins tonight generated probably just spurred folks to post about it asap.)

29. Now, I certainly wouldn't go along with that!
People who see something earlier than we do here on the west coast should absolutely post about it if they want. By putting "spoiler" in the subject line, then I and others here can click on the post or not, as we choose.

I don't quite get that one (not even wanting the spoiler IN the thread) is beyond me.

32. As a former left-coaster (heart's still in SF), I posted one of the threads ...
... without knowing that the Grammy's weren't being broadcast live. Living on the left coast for twenty years, I was used to sporting events, award ceremonies, and news events being broadcast live and other stuff time-shifted. (Admittedly, I've rarely watched the Grammies.) So, I just didn't even think about it.

For my failure to realize that, I apologized ... and do apologize. As for the left-coaster who had to play spoiler-Nazi even inside a spoiler thread, I've formed the clear impression that person just likes to make insulting remarks - snarky shit.

Peace! :hi:

Three hours delayed to PT, then another two hours (or is it three? I forget) for Hawaiian Time. (We're in Portland, Oregon.)

Watching TV in Hawaii is pretty interesting -- you can catch the morning news from the East Coast before you go to bed if that happens to be around midnight.

That must be freakin' weird to have to contend with all the time. I have no idea what Hawaiian business people, who have to work with the East Coast schedules, do. They must be night owls!

Are you on Oahu? We're vacation club owners at the Hilton Hawaiian Village at Waikiki. We haven't been back to Maui since the 1980s, and we expect we'll see big changes.

Mahalo for your post.

I live on Oahu, but love Maui.

Maui has changed quite a bit; it keeps growing & growing. More traffic, more roads, much more expensive, but I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

We don't change our clocks out here, so right now we're 5 hours behind East Coast. However when you change your clocks we'll be 6 hours behind.

and with instant web access, we have to make sure we don't hear about events BEFORE they are scheduled to take place in our time zone.

When in doubt, I don't log in until it's "safe" to do so. Some events that are scheduled simultaneously -- we used to call it "simulcast", with no delay, are fine. The Academy Awards, for example, start around 5:30 PM PT, and 8:30 PM ET. Many championship sports games, like the Super Bowl are also no problem.

This was an easier situation to avoid before the Internet. I'm from the dinosaur age. In the early 1960s, my job with the New York "Tonight Show" unit was to get the nightly tape edited and "bicycled" (not really on a bicycle!) to the airport to fly it to Los Angeles, so the West Coast TV stations could show it the next night. So, the show we recorded at NBC on Monday at 6:30 PM was usually shown on Tuesday at 11:30 PM. (I have no idea what the rest of the country did! My production assistant duties were limited to typing TelePrompTer copy and sitting on the stool in front of the cameras as a "color girl" while cameramen adjusted their equipment.

Isn't that special?

Have a great week!

49. Even though the Grammy's aren't "all that" in terms of what's going
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 06:10 AM by SeattleGirl
on in the world at large, I still get pissed off. This stems primarily from my experience in the Carter-Reagan election in 1980. First time I voted in a presidential election; heck, first time I voted, and the freakin' MSM folks announced that Carter had conceded to Reagan just as I was pulling into my driveway at 5:00 PST!

As I said before, it's not the end of the world, to read who won what at the Grammy's or the Oscars, or whatever. My point was that there may be some folks around here would appreciate finding out the winners in our own time zone, not when someone in the oh-so-privileged east coast crowd decides it's time.

I just get tired of the east coast "get over it" crap. My feeling is, I have as much a right to be pleased or excited or whatever, as everyone else in terms of time zone. As for me making a kind request to hold off in terms of the time differential, all I can say is, I hope y'all have an instance some day where you find out something before you can see it, and then tell me how unreasonable I'm being.

I would bet a month's salary that lots of the earlier time zone folks wouldn't be so very happy in that case.

I agree with your sentiment. Unfortunately, around here, it will probably just bring you grief. I run some fan groups for certain television shows...(Buffy, Angel, Firefly and many current ones in the genres SciFi, Fantasy, Horror)...and getting people to NOT spoil people and to leave spoiler space is one of our biggest problems.

People really don't mind hurting other people and they don't mind hurting other people's feelings. It's weird.

I will never spoil you. I promise.

68. It is odd.
On my group you aren't allowed to post spoilers until the episode has aired on the West Coast.

Just btw, my girlfriend is a Seattle Girl too. I'm the Texas Girl in the family. We live in Austin and have been together for 15 years and I still haven't visited Seattle. I hope to this summer.

67. I don't think I've made that mistake before, but you've made an excellent point.
I will certainly try to be more cognizant of our west coast family in the future.

70. As I said above, I made that mistake once, and won't do it again.
Lots of people immediately posted that they had not seen a particular show yet (it reruns later in the evening), and so I changed my subject line right away.

I felt bad.
