Gen Patreaus you are a Liar.
You have also broken the honor code that at one point was drilled into your head as a young Cadet

You have betrayed your troops

You have betrayed your honor

that is all

2. A lot of people
in the Pentagon disagree with him. That does not mean that he is right or wrong, but it does indicate that those DUers who disagree with him are not somehow "anti-military," despite some attempts to paint them with that brush.

I'm always glad when you speak out. Thank you.

3. You welcome
and of course the first DU'er to tell me that I am anti military, I'll gladly compare service records with

That said, any officer around the world has it drilled into his or her head that you don't lie for politicos, and that your first duty is to your troops

Things like constitions and loyalty to central goverments or not, vary from country to country

But the loyalty to YOUR troops, that doesn't

After all your authority to lead comes from their willinness to follow

Patreaus has forgotten those little nuggets quickly learned by Junior Officers... the first time they tell a first sergeant to do something and the first sergeant nudges them into the right decision and lets them thik it is their decision.

And if he should go, FOLLOW ME and his troops don't... I will not be too shocked at this point

4. I don't think there's any one thing the General actually lied about.
Rather than lieing, at each juncture he made the choice that furthers the bushie agenda. This might further his own agenda, given his record of flubbing the dud on major issues, or it might be more of a protective coloration exercise.

Either way, there are no real, actual lies in his presentation, but the overall project is a mashup of hoped-fors, maybes, and putting the best face on its that looks a lot like one huge lie and not in keeping with what we thought we were or hope to become as a nation.

6. Well I guess not considering those killed with bullet in
front of head a terrorist attack, and doing such with those with bullet in back of head an attack ain't lying

Ok... whatever

And yes when he said that he WROTE that report and nobody vetted it, that was a clear lie... if you know anything about how these reports are put together and the ammount of vetting that goes with them.

Yes the Pentagon, including his boss had to vet that ... no matter how nicely The General told you that his boss, Adm Fallon, didn't

Of course that was just the opening shot yesterday

5. He doesn't even know what we are doing there, he was told to
run the show in Iraq & he did it, he's the wrong guy to be asking "why" questions. jr should never have put the guy in this situation, he ought to be answering the questions.

8. He had the same stark choice the Chief of Staff of the Army
Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 06:49 PM by nadinbrzezinski
had during Vietnam when testifying

He could dance for the bush administraiton or tell the full truth, the unvarnished truth, et al

In the short run it might have cost him his job. Hell, even a star... but in the long run he would have seen as an honorable man

Now... just as Westmoreland, he will be seen as a toadie

9. Lying is when you know that what you are saying is not the
whole truth & nothing but the truth. Has this General passed that test?

14. The guy is being a soldier - following orders. If we had a dem pres you
better hope he would do the same thing.

He can't help it if his CIC is a flaming POS.

He could resign but apparently he feels he is doing the right thing. He is wrong - but he was just following orders. That is the catch 22 that the nazis used after WWII though. At what point do you cash it all in and say, "Hey. This is wrong."

15. Nuremberg comes to mind
by the way, I understand that catch 22

I have disobereyed orders...

So that does not wash

As I said, he had two choices. He could dance, or he could speak the truth.

He chose the former, and just like Westmoreland he will go down that road, not the road of General Harold K Johson, who told the unvarnished truth
