Has Tweety Seen The Light?
He's been on fire since he got back from vacation. Maybe firing that producer was a good idea. The guests have been better and as well as the conversation. Last night he had 2 dems on at the same time, with no Con to refute them. His segment tonight with Biden was amazing. He's calling the whole Petreus hearing for the sham it is.

It can't have escaped his, and his bosses attention, how KO's ratings are blasting through the Faux News citadel. Maybe Tweety has been told to follow KO's lead. Great for us.

13. The first two are registered GOP. Tweety has a resume that includes THREE prominent D bosses.
Tip O'Neill, Ed Muskie, and Jimmy Carter.

He may not be sufficiently liberal for some DUers, but he's not Arlen or Hagel.

17. He isn't an advocate for DU. He works for a subsidiary of GE, a top ten Pentagon contractor.
All things considered, he's doing the best he can.

Look at what happened to Imus. Had he been pro-war (instead of against it and calling Bush an idiot) and insulted that basketball team, he'd still be on the air today.

GE realizes, too, that the mood of the country is changing. They need to find another war, a new opportunity to make money off of governments. In the meantime, they need you to watch, so the next time they have to sell you a line of shit, you'll be 'loyal' to their stations.

19. Three of my
favorite democrats, at that.

Mr. Matthews is found on the first page of Joseph Wilson's book, as he immediately called Wilson to warn him that Rove had called and said Valerie Plame was "fair game." The Libby trial documented that the OVP was obsessed with Mr. Matthews' reporting on the war and the Plame scandal. The Corn & Isikoff book (Hubris) documents how the neoconservatives attempted to threaten Mr. Matthews on the job.

Mr. Matthews has been against the war in Iraq from the beginning. He has, unfortunely, made statements of support for the president that offend many DUers. I am convinced that this is because of two things: first, he has an old-fashioned respect for the office of the president, and believes that the country is harmed by presidential scandals; and second, he is employed in a position that does not always allow him to speak openly -- the Plame scandal being but one example.

27. Right.
It can't be that Mr. Matthews has a variety of opinions, some that tend to be similar to many DUers, and others that are very different. It must be that he has been instructed to follow KO's lead on 2.5 nights per week! There is no other possibility!

79. What about his fawning over the 'manly aspects" of Republican Candidates
time after time and leering as he did it? So many things make me think he's just a con artist working for his owner.

But...hey...from time to time i've posted on DU some good stuff he's done after swearing i'd never watch him or post about him again. But, he makes me crazy with his "twist to which way wind is blowing" stuff so I can't be as charitable as some here about it just being his producer. Thompson's "musk and English Leather (or was it Aqua Velva) odors and Bush's Cod Piece, belt buckle and all the rest about Guiliani might make some DU'ers sort of worry about his sanity...which we did...and his pandering to Repugs while vilely trashing Dems like Gore and others.

But, if it was his producer...then i hope the ratings of Keith can get Tweety working harder for his money if he thinks being a little more kindly to his middle and left folks will fill his pocket.

We need all the help we can get...so we can't be greedy and expect too much, I guess.

83. Interesting.
In my opinion, the business about his opinions about politicians merely reflects the level of discomfort that our culture -- even the somewhat enlightened left -- has with certain topics. If we were to watch an NFL football game, the announcers would all make comments about male players that would make the Matthews bashers blush. Who owns the problem?

I think that a large amount of the dislike of Matthews is a result of his taking what I think is the wrong position on serious issues. But there are also efforts by the same group of people he has been right about -- the neoconservatives and Cheneyites -- to discredit him, and reduce the impact of his show. The friends of Libby, Wolfowitz, Cheney and Feith have not stopped at calling Russert. They attempt to inject their insults like novocaine -- even on progressive forums -- in order to numb people to the important work that is a part of Hardball.

Is Matthews' making a compliment about Mitt Romney more important than his helping to expose the role of Cheney, Rove and Libby in the Plame scandal? Perhaps to some. But certainly not to me.

The whole Mathew's reaction to the mission accomplished speech on the Lincoln.

When he made his call for the whole anti-war crowd to apologize and admit they were wrong, and that Bush had won the conflict handily, when is he ever going to come to terms with that whole performance?

It was a pretty disgusting display, he was just gushing over how masculine Bush looked in that jumpsuit. :puke:

87. It has nothing
to do with trusting you -- most polls indicate 12 out of every 10 Americans do trust you.

However, Mr. Matthews is consistent in: {a} his opposition to the war in Iraq; and {b} his liking President Bush. The changes in the polls have not shown any influence on either of those two things. And you don't have to trust me on that: check for yourself.

5. He was aggressively opposed to invading Iraq from the beginning
And since the discussion yesterday and today was about ... Iraq ... he's simply consolidating his views there. He hated the neo-cons, and this is his moment to stick it to them and their ideas.

But don't worry: he'll be gushing over GIuliani or Fred Thompson as soon as this is over. So don't think there is some kind of political change going on here. When it comes to Iraq, you can count on Matthews to put on a spirited debate against the administration's policy. Everything else is still squarely Republican Party.

31. Is Tweety Clueless too?
Check out this thread at Crooks and Liars. They link to a clip of Tweety and guests discussing the Shrubmeister's sense of humor and how the Shrub, as a joke, pretends to be the Austin Powers character Dr. Evil from time to time. Tweety wonders out loud why Shrub is attracted to the character of a "clueless megalomaniac."

Sometimes the jokes just right themselves....

One of the folksy, “gosh durnit, that president sure is a funny feller” anecdotes in Robert Draper’s new book about George W. Bush, Dead Certain, is that Dubya is a big fan of Austin Powers and in particular, the character of Dr. Evil, imitating him often along the corridors of the White House.

My favorite part? Chris Matthews asking “Why a clueless megalomaniac?”

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/09/10/sometimes-the-jokes-just-write-themselves/#comments

You can view the clip in question at the above link.

64. It's kind of nice
to see him this intensely involved in the effort to tell the public the truth about the war. Matthews is a smart man, and has a background that pre-dates his days in Washington that provide him with a point of view that doesn't always play well with DUers. He does know that the Cheneyites have lied us into a war that, as bad as it is, could become far worse in the next year. He has, for example, made repeated reference to the neoconservative/OVP efforts to engage in hostilities against Iran. Those are important issues that he is attempting to address.

65. When it comes to presidential candidates,
Matthews instincts suck, but with this, he's nailed it.

68. There are
a number of issues that I disagree strongly with him on. But there are three important ones I agree with him on: the war in Iraq is wrong; the Plame scandal was a Cheney-run operation; and the same people who lied us into the war in Iraq, and who exposed Plame, are attempting to cause hostilities with Iran.

Sen. Joe Biden on Petraeus testimony
Sept. 11: Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., chaired Tuesday’s hearing and asked General Petraeus about the wisdom of keeping U.S. troops in Iraq into next year if the circumstances on the ground don't change. He speaks with “Hardball’s” Chris Matthews. about 10 minutes

74. There goes Biden with his, "oh we need 67 votes to override a veto".
You don't need 67 votes to defund Bush's occupation. But he's already pledged to vote for more Iraq occupation money.

72. Tweety is not to be trusted
He has some measure of responsibility for the war he now opposes. He gave free and gushing praise to the butch administration types who were hyping the war. He clearly wanted to felate bush when he had on his flight suit and cod piece.

Tweety ain't shit. Just another sad little mary with a small dick complex.

He said that Petraeus was thinking that this was going to be a 10 year war, he and "that cookie pusher he brought with him."

90. This ("always opposed this war") & other CANARDS about Tweety
like, the other one, "Tweety has draft age sons so he opposed the war." WHAT A CROCK!!1 In the run-up to the invasion he was at the forefront of the drumbeaters. Here's why saving old posts is useful:

How Tweety "Executed" DONAHUE on MSNBC. Tweety was on his book tour for another one of his "books" (large type, wide spaces between lines, blank half-pages). It was in the jingoistic hysteria in the run-up to the illegal Iraq attack. The book was about supposed "Americanism" --an American Civ 101 ripoff about books and movies and cultural stuff that are essentially American (think, "The Great Gatsby"). So Phil welcomed him as a colleague and peer on Phil's show for the full hour to plug the book. From the moment he appeared, there was a strange, deadly snake look in Tweety's snake eyes. Phil was walking around, apparently not sensing anything, while Tweety was motionless, following him only with his eyes. Phil brought up something or other questioning blind jingoism, and Tweety STRUCK! He started out with venom dripping, "You see THIS is EXACTLY what's wrong with you Liberals: You are NEGATIVE about this country, you find NOTHING good about it," and on and on. It took awhile before Phil figured out what was happening. Later, Phil was sitting at the table with Tweety and, weaker and weaker, did some of his trademark shoulder shrugging and arm waving. Tweety delivered the coup de grace, "What's THIS (mimicking the movements)??!! What's with the --APE-- movements???" Days or a week or two later, Phil's cancellation was announced and took effect.

93. I don't have faith in him - But air time is key to getting our message out
He has a choice to make. He can be an "agent of change" by helping us get out of Iraq, and raise his ratings & revenues at the same time. Or he can be FoxNews Lite and watch his ratings drop like a stone.
