Good PLAYBOY intereview with Keith Olbermann: If GOP wins Draft will return
I got my PLAYBOY on Saturday and it contains an excellent interview with Keith Olbermann. Among his observations:

"We will see a draft if the Republicans win in 2008, because they've got a plan to invade every coutnry except Liechtenstein but not enough soldiers to do it. To get enough soldiers, they would need a draft. Adn that would be interesting. You'd have rioting in the streets within 48 hours. And it wouldn't be the kids rioting; it would be their parents."

PB: Describe President Bush.
KO: Nixonian. The difference between Bush and Richard Nixon is that Nixon sent draftees to Vietnam. If draftees instead of volunteers were dying in Iraq, I think Bush would have been impeached by now.

PB: Who has impressed you in this year's debates?
KO: The Democrats have a lot of good speakers. I think Joe Biden scores highest on the three keys: passion, detail and eloquence.

PB: Does the hard-right tilt of the Supreme Court worry you?
KO: The court is on the edge of becoming a clean-shaven version of the religious courts of Iran. But it could be worse--you get the feeling that even this crew would have decided Dred Scott in favor of Scott, not in favor of slavery.

PB: What do you think of the Fox News slogan, "Fair and Balanced?"
KO: I've suggested a more accurate one: "Fox, not facts." But they haven't adopted that yet.

PB: There was evidence of voting irregularities in Ohio in the Bush-Kerry election. Was there a fix? Do you think the election went the wrong way?
KO: Possibly. It was academic once Bush was sworn in, but if you bought all of Ohio's voters together today, they'd look around at one another and say, "I didn't vote for him. It must have been a fix."

There is much much more

I was just enjoying his sense of humor on NBC (football coverage). Kostas gave him a great compliment.

Interesting about him suggesting Biden has the complete package. I'm not much of a Biden fan, but he came out strong against the "surge is working" bull - I like to see that. Haven't chosen my candidate - how they all respond to this stall tactic will mean a lot to me.

9. KO was all sports until the Constitution started getting shredded
And, as he said, he looked around to see who was speaking up and realized it was his job .

Most true American heroes end up in the job by accident.

20. Might I inquire... what was the compliment?
(Costas should be careful, unless he wants a knock on his door from Fox security forces.)

8. You'd need something like another really bad terrorist attack to get a draft.

23. Yeah, Rethugs have a fine line to walk ...
... between scaring the public enough to maintain perpetual war (to perpetuate profits and power) and the point at which the military is broken, requiring the Draft. Once the Draft is reinstated, the jig is up and you'll see Americans scrambling for hybrids, compacts and bicycles, to protect Brandon and Tiffany.

(NOTE: The military is doubly involuntary at this point. It's hardly "voluntary" when one's choices are enlist or starve -- thanks, arch-capitalism -- and stop-loss negates one's previous terms of service.)

11. Thanks, book!
DeepModem Dad is traveling, so I'll have to go buy a "Playboy" for myself. Any suggestions of how to explain to the newstand guy, or just boldly go and say Mom needs a Playboy?

17. Frank Zappa
Playboy honored Frank Zappa back in around 1992 by naming him "Musician of the year" and giving him the monthly "Playboy Interview" both in the same issue. Zappa may have been the only person Playboy ever gave such an honor to!

18. I know plenty of parents, Dems and Repugs alike, who would love a draft
They have sons who they can't bullshit into enlisting no matter how hard they try. A draft would make things a lot easier on them.
