" Megachurch leader D. James Kennedy dies"
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Rev. D. James Kennedy, a pioneering megachurch pastor who became one of the nation's most prominent Christian broadcasters and a key figure in the rise of the religious right, died Wednesday, a church spokesman said. He was 76.

Church spokesman John Aman said Kennedy died at his home in Fort Lauderdale. He had announced his retirement last month and had recently suffered a heart attack.

Kennedy took the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale from a congregation of 45 in 1959 to a megachurch of nearly 10,000 members today.

He also founded the Center for Christian Statesmanship in Washington, organizing Capitol Hill Bible studies and other events that attracted top government officials and encouraged them "to embrace God's providential purpose for this nation."

14. Mustaine's religious now?
Honestly, I haven't listened to them since Countdown To Extinction, but I never would have guessed he'd turn fundie. I guess when you've been a dick to everyone in the world, Jesus is all you've got left.

17. He is.
Dave Mustaine Vs. Satanic Bands

"Yes, I said that I was not really interested in playing with Satanic , and that is because I changed my outlook on life and my spritual beliefs over three years ago. I became a Christian, yes, and I have made even more mistakes now that I have, because there are things I do that I know I should not do, and things I do not do that I know I should.

So now he's an even bigger idiot than he was to start with.No easy feat.

29. Mustaine is a whack job now.
He disgusts me. He states on the Megadeth website that his favorite hosts are Glen "Nazi" Beck and Bill O'Leilly.

30. It's weird how radically some people change in a relatively short period of time.
It seems Dave became such a big asshole it sucked his head up in it.

6. Kennedy was a close associate of Falwell, Robertson
Megachurch leader D. James Kennedy dies

Rev. D. James Kennedy

By KELLI KENNEDY, Associated Press Writer
September 5, 2007

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Rev. D. James Kennedy, a pioneering megachurch pastor who became one of the nation's most prominent Christian broadcasters and a key figure in the rise of the religious right, died Wednesday, a church spokesman said. He was 76.

.....

In 1974, Kennedy started Coral Ridge Ministries, his radio and TV outreach arm, which now claims a weekly audience of 3.5 million. Kennedy's TV show "The Coral Ridge Hour," airs on more than 400 stations and four cable networks and is broadcast to more than 150 countries on the Armed Forces Network, his ministry says. Last year, the National Religious Broadcasters association inducted him into their Hall of Fame.

"He was one of the early visionaries who saw that you could use electronic media to extend the four walls of the church to reach a broader audience," said Frank Wright, president and chief executive officer of the NRB.

Kennedy was a close colleague of the Rev. Pat Robertson, the Rev. Jerry Falwell and other religious broadcasters and was an early board member of the Moral Majority, which Falwell formed in 1979.

12. Damn fucking Domininist. Won't miss him a bit
A leader in dissolving the separation of church and state. A major organizer of the fundamentalist underground that helped throw 2004 to Bush.

The only bad news here is that others will rise up to take his place.

13. A question of megachurches
Now, I don't know too much about these folks other than what I've seen in clips of movies like "Jesus Camp" and Frontline-type features on the Religious Right. Anyway, my question stems from this: I grew up attending a modest neighborhood Methodist Church. Parts of the building were a bit creeky, but everyone did their best to maintain things. The building itself dated back to the late 19th century. Anyway, these megachurches seem like they must require a ton of money to maintain (to say nothing of the initial outlay to get them constructed). They have state-of-the-art sound systems, rock star-type lighting, giant video screens, etc. It seems to me they must ultimately be unsustainable, even with the mega-rich among the mega-conservative dumping their donations on them. Any thoughts?

33. I go to a liberal large church that some call a megachurch
We have around 2000 attendees every Sunday-split between two services. The sunday school wing needed new a/c recently-it cost $59,000.

The gardening is done by members, but there is a paid maintenance crew.

The amount of money that a congregation that size can bring in, even with the people like me who donate $15-20 a month is enough to keep the building up. Our minister is also pretty good with money, as is the board.

16. May God in God's mercy forgive him for his own failure to spread God's true love and compassion
Like Falwell, Kennedy too often preached a false gospel of division, fear and hatred.

My hope as a Christian is that in his dying breaths, Kennedy felt the forgiveness of the many people he had hurt with his words during his life, and that he be accepted into heaven as a forgiven soul.

20. Kennedy had a "gay-curing" "ministry"
a while back called "Worthy Vessels". word has it that Babs and Poppy made Georgie Butch attend "Worthy Vessels" after college, due to his obvious proclivities.

one could Google this stuff years ago, but it has all vanished down the memory hole.

the administrators of the church decided NOT to tell anyone that he was in a coma after he had the heart attack, so people would continue sending money in.
