Officially apologizing for being an insensitive jerk.

I was an insensitive jerk and made some crude jokes and comments regarding the larry craig case. I pissed some folks off, and I now offer my lame and inadequate apology with a caveat to try to not be such an insensitive jerk in the future.

Odds are I will be an insensitive jerk again, because basically deep down inside, I myself am terribly flawed and have been an insensitive jerk on several occassions by trying to be funny, and I have no right to be an insensitive asshole to anyone.

I don't even expect my apology to be accepted, but I offer it sincerely.

3. You know, interestingly, even though I am an 'ally' and not

a member of the GLBT community and therefore don't speak for them, I know I appreciate when someone decides that something that have posted will be regarded as bigoted. I have an enormous soft spot right now for the GLBT community on DU because without exception, they are compassionate, caring and devoted.

I appreciate your apology. It's not mine to accept, but I appreciate the gesture.

10. I've watched as "sensitive types"

have gone through a process here, posting something THEY think is funny from their exnominative perspective, then realizing it may have caused pain to those whom they sincerely wish no ill. Those "oh so PC folks" get it as others defend their "right" to "free speech" insisting those who felt the sting "lighten up."

4. I want to apologize, as well. Especially because I made mention

of Rick Santorum and turtles and later saw an OP stating that people here were associating being gay with bestiality.

I'm very concerned that my reference to Santorum's weird analogy, which was part of a very funny TDS bit, could have been offensive.

5. It takes a big man to apologize and admit he was wrong. I stopped

reading all the Craig posts a long time ago, but I accept your apology - no one would know better than yourself that you were a jerk and I'm impressed that you recognized that in yourself. I think you're probably a good person so don't beat yourself up too much. Gays are a forgiving bunch - they have to be.

We all make mistakes, say things we don't realize will bother others, and from time to time (especially on the internet) we can all be real jerks! (I'm not calling you a real jerk - I'm speaking very generally and including myself in that word "all")

I'm not of the GLBT community, so I can't say apology accepted because it's not mine to accept, but I have to applaud you for this excellent post! :toast:

13. Of all the insensitive jerks I've known, not one has ever had an epiphany

or has known enough to recognize the fact that they were, indeed, insensitive
jerks. So - although I did not read any of your possibly offensive posts - I do
want to congratulate you on admitting your faults and trying to become a better
person, by so doing.

14. If You Weren't Being Malicious, You Don't Owe Me an Apology.

I can't speak for the entire GLBT community, but as far as I'm concerned, you're free to say whatever you want, and you don't owe anyone an explanation. I would be angry with you if I felt that you'd said anything maliciously, just to piss people off...in which case, someone would most likely have alerted on you, and gotten your posts deleted anyway.

Look, I understand (I think we ALL understand) that there's an undercurrent of humor involved with the Larry Craig case. I can definitely see why so many people were inspired to have fun with it. Even though it got old VERY quickly for me and many of my gay and lesbian brethren, I think we all realize that temptation. Quite frankly, I feel like I should apologize for not being more tolerant of other's rights to say what they wanted. Even during the worst of it, I don't believe there was any real malice intended toward the gay community; just a lot of tastelessness, some ignorance, and short tempers on both sides.

For what it's worth, I accept your apology, unnecessary though I feel it is, and I hope anyone who feels I came down too hard on the heterosexual community will accept mine. In a way, I've enjoyed the last few days for the interesting debate on public sex mores, but I'll be very glad when we've all put this behind us.
