NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Two people who sprinkled flour in a parking lot to mark a trail for their offbeat running club inadvertently caused a bioterrorism scare and now face a felony charge.

New Haven ophthalmologist Daniel Salchow, 36, and his sister, Dorothee, 31, who is visiting from Hamburg, Germany, were both charged with first-degree breach of peace, a felony.

(snip)

“Hares” are given the task of marking a trail to direct runners, throwing in some dead ends and forks as challenges. On Thursday, the Salchows decided to route runners through the massive IKEA parking lot.

(snip)

Mayoral spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga said the city plans to seek restitution from the Salchows, who are due in court Sept. 14.

1. Hash House Harriers-the drinking club with a running problem
http://www.gthhh.com/

ON! ON!

I've never run with them nor have I ever actually seen them on a run but I am told that they do indeed exist and here in Richmond too.

:shrug:

The ON! ON! is a group rallying cry. Basically you get together with some other runners "rabbits" take off and drop chalk for the group to follow and then at the end everyone drinks beer like at 9 or 10 AM. Everyone has a nickname too soooo :scared:

5. Oh good grief
this is just silly. These people weren't trying to scare anyone. There was no intent to disrupt anything. Whatever happened to prosecutorial discretion?

Pity the poor woman who's sack of flour breaks on her way to her car in the parking lot of the supermarket.

Your tax dollars at work. :eyes:

6. 'Police fielded a call just before 5 p.m.
that someone was sprinkling powder on the ground. The store was evacuated and remained closed the rest of the night. The incident prompted a massive response from police in New Haven and surrounding towns."

No paranoid over-reactions here, huh? :eyes:

7. No offense, but you might want to change the title of the thread.

It's right above your post in the GD.

BTW, I read that story a few days ago. That's our level of stupidity anymore, apparently.

10. Oh, Christ... here's a link to the local paper
And I did not know that Ikea had a store in New Haven! Cool!

<snip>

He said he played the game when he lived in Washington, D.C., and New York City, and never had any problem with authorities. He also said he had treated a 9/11 victim in New York.

"We are really disturbed, really stunned," he said of the arrests. "All we wanted to do was put down a running trail. We use flour because it's biodegradable."

<snip>

Salchow said when he was called back to Ikea Thursday, he identified himself to police and tried to "clarify the situation." But, he added, "I was yelled at and told to step back. I wasn't given an opportunity to explain."

<anip>

But she said that because the operation included dozens of people from the New Haven Police, Fire and Health departments along with the state police, the FBI and members of several suburban police departments — many of them on overtime — the tab could total tens of thousands of dollars. She said heads of the emergency response departments are likely to seek restitution.

So, is it your fault if everybody around you over-reacts?

11. I would hope that it would be thrown our of court with a slight
warning to perhaps to post the area with the line designated as a race line, and a notification to the authorities so if alerted they can calm any fears.

However, I cannot manage to get a single print-out of this story as neither printing the website page nor c&p function. :shrug:
