Demonstrators showing a touch of gray

Cindy Sheehan

Demonstrators showing a touch of gray
By JUSTIN ELLIS, Staff Writer August 26, 2007

KENNEBUNKPORT — One of the more popular protest chants at Saturday's anti-war rally was, "This is what democracy looks like."

Judging by the crowd, democracy has a little gray showing.

After the U.S. began the war on terrorism, activists long dormant since the 1960s and 1970s have re-emerged to hold rallies, lead protests and show their opposition to the war.

In that time, they have been just as vocal in their concern that the young people of today have not taken up the flag of dissent.

Students who took part in Saturday's protest, however, say they are just as engaged as the activists of the past and passionate about the war and other social issues that will affect their future.

Howard University senior Eugene Puryear was one of the speakers at the anti-war rally Saturday.

4. Hard to Get the Kids Out
Unless they are in line waiting for the new I-Phone.

Makes me want wax nostalgic for the draft, when you had to fear being shipped off to Vietnam, half-way across the world on any given day, to die in a jungle where neither side probably wanted you there.

A lot of rich people got richer off all the poor people dying on both sides of that worthless war.

Maybe then, they'd be inspired to get involved, and use some of that youthful energy towards something good.

7. An alternate explanation is that kids these days are working their asses off
to get through school.

When Mommy and Daddy pay for college, there's a lot more free time to play hippie, smoke pot, and have self-indulgent sit-ins which may or may not have played a marginal role in the withdrawal of U.S. forces 8 years later.
