That psycho chick astronaut in the news again
Apologetic astro-nut wants bracelet off

ORLANDO, Fla. - Former astronaut Lisa Nowak, who allegedly attacked a woman who wanted the same man in an astronaut love triangle, yesterday faced her rival in court and apologized.

Nowak also asked to have her electronic monitoring bracelet removed because it cuts her ankle, makes it hard to tie her boot, and its batteries have to be changed twice a day.

Looking at Shipman, a fellow astronaut, seated a few rows away, Nowak said, “I would like her to know how very sorry I am.” She also apologized for humiliating Shipman. But Shipman earlier told the judge she feels better knowing Nowak she is monitored.

“It is a comfort,” Shipman said.

Nowak, 44, drove from Houston to Orlando wearing baby diapers, then pepper sprayed Shipman and tried to force her way into Shipman’s car, police say.

Her lawyer is trying to have evidence against Nowak thrown out, including her confession to police and the steel mallet, BB gun and knife that she had with her.

When Nowak testified yesterday that she has spent $3,000 on batteries for her monitoring bracelet, an assistant D.A. said if money is an issue, “You’re paying a media consultant - fire the consultant.”

3. The wearing of the diaper issue was not true, This brilliant high
achiever snapped under pressure, and it's all an unfortunate and embarrassing ordeal for her.
Lets get her the psychiatric care she needs and focus on the real nuts and murderers in the government.

7. Her lawyer claimed she didn't wear diapers.
The police say she did.

15. Right.
Her lawyer believes that he can get her conversation with a police officer thrown out. In that conversation, she discussed the soiled diapers in her automobile. She did, in fact, wear the diapers.

16. It is possible
that she "snapped under pressure." But there is nothing that would indicate that this is the case. Her plan and her ability to take steps to complete it are evidence of an organized mind. The tapes of her talking to police do not appear to show a person who has "snapped." On the contrary, she seems to pose a danger to others.

"Brilliant high achievers" are not entitled to special treatment for their crimes.

"Astro-nut"? That doesn't seem like professional journalism to me. I object because psycho-chick adds unnecessary misogyny to the already unfortunate mockery of mental illness.

12. Her press conference
What got me in the press conference she held was her whining about the reporters, etc. outside of her door, it was almost as if she thinks she was the victim here.

Did get a laugh about of the Prosecutor though who told her that if she was financially strapped and couldn't pay for her weekly monitoring fee she could always FIRE the PR agent she'd hired.

She who breaks the law does the time. She also clearly needs help that the legal system probably won't provide.

20. What's sexist is the automatic assumption that when a woman commits a crime
she must be mentally ill. I get pretty sick of that bullshit, both as a woman and as someone who has struggled with legitimate mental illness.

It's a cop-out and an excuse. Almost never do I hear anyone say the same about a guy - more often, he's called an animal or a monster.

This woman had a plan, she pre-meditated her actions, as evidenced by the items she brought and the timing of her trip. She has behaved since her arrest as if she were the victim, showing no remorse whatsoever for the actual victims's suffering - instead insisting that she "just wanted to talk to her."

The wording may be juvenile but I'm sick up to here of people defending female criminals by tagging them as mentally ill.

22. Not defending her in any way. Taken all together, 'psycho' seems quite apt for
the bizarre nature of her crime. The premeditation and careful planning if anything only enhances that quality.

23. Who defended her? In my view mental illness is evidenced in a separation from reality.
What I saw and heard was a person who was separated from reality, and trying to convince others of that delusion. To refer to a woman in that state as a "psycho-chick" is juvenile sexist mockery. You're welcome to your own agenda.

28. If the Police read her the Miranda Rights before her interview
there is no cause to throw out her statements or the evidence gathered. The statement that she just wanted to talk to her intended target is absurd. She intended to kill that person. Whether she was mentally impaired is not the issue if she was not out of touch with reality. The insanity defense only works if the person was not capable of judging right from wrong. It certainly seems that she knew the difference but went ahead & tried to kill another person. This case is only amusing to some because of the diaper situation. Attempted murder is not all that amusing, in my view. Were she not a former Astronaut, the public would not have heard about this case. She may have mental problems but that will not excuse her actions.

27. It's not that she's a woman, at least not from my point of view...
it's that she worked for friggin' NASA, as an astronaut. Maybe it's wrong to think of astronauts as highly intelligent and stable people, but that's what you'd imagine; it sure seems like she SNAPPED.

If a gay, African American, or Muslim committed a crime would we use a pejorative term to refer to their orientation, race or religion?
