Momentum Building for September 4th Climate Emergency Fast.
By Ted Glick, ClimateEmergency.org,
August 24, 2007.

"The September 4th (and beyond) Climate Emergency Fast keeps growing and building! A week ago there were 310 of us; today there are 535. Some of those who've joined include Rev. Jim Wallis of Sojourners, Indian author and activist Vandana Shiva, South African poet Dennis Brutus... Rev. Charles Morris of Michigan Interfaith Power and Light... Bill McKibben and other Step It Up leaders... and many more... The primary purpose of this action is to bring political pressure on the U.S. Congress, demanding that they pass strong climate legislation.

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are committed to trying to get climate legislation passed this fall. We are focusing on three main demands, which are: 1) no new coal or coal-to-liquid plants; 2) freeze and major reductions in carbon emissions; 3) A $25 billion downpayment in the 2008 fiscal year for conservation, efficiency and renewables.

We urge people, whether fasting or not, to take action on September 4th, to apply pressure on local Congresspeople and the U.S. Senators in your state. You can organize a vigil outside one of their offices. You can set up a meeting with their staff people (since they'll be in D.C. on this day). You can get your friends, co-workers, colleagues and anyone else you know to make phone calls or send emails or faxes urging that they support our demands and take strong action to address the climate crisis." Ted Glick is Coordinator, U.S. Climate Emergency Council and a cofounder of the Climate Crisis Coalition."
~~~~~~
What I will be doing:
Since I have to work that day I won't be fasting on September 4th, but will be doing so on September 8th. That following week I will be sending out letters to various companies regarding this crisis and their corporate and moral responsibility to address it, and starting my own personal campaign to wean people off of bottled water which in my view is one of the biggest scams ever perpetrated on the American people and one of the many reasons for the environmental catastrophe we are now heading for.
On September 4, I will however be calling and faxing my representatives and also putting together a letter that I intend to send to EVERY and I mean every candidate regarding this crisis and it being an integral part of their platform. Let us see just how much corporate influence really sways this political process... for the only way in my view that this crisis WILL be discussed by every candidate across the political spectrum is if WE demand that they talk about it and DO something about it. They need to be challenged on it at every venue they speak at and at every debate. ESPECIALLY the Republican candidates who seem to know nothing but talking about getting "the evildoers." Well, EXXON is then a chief environmental "evildoer" and it is time for Democrats AND Republicans to join together for the common good of this planet. And yes, I know, it seems like it is impossible... but it is imperative.
I hope that some will at least look at this site and decide on their own to take action. We are out of time in waiting for others to do this for us, and those who have do not deserve to be left out here fighting this all alone.
2. How important is the climate crisis to you?
If you currently support someone for office, have you written them to tell them how important it is to you and that it must be something we ALL have in our consciousness in order to make any real progress in mitigating it? That in order to change the toxic political atmosphere in this country we are the ones who must stand up to it on a moral level and dismantle it first?
