senator leahy requests a meeting with george bush about his obstruction of investigation into u.s. attorneys' firings

not content to "sit and
wait it out" all through august,
today -- in a letter sent to the
white house -- senator patrick leahy
requested a face-to-face meeting
with u.s. president george bush,
to get to the bottom of the u.s.
attorneys' firings scandal, and his
obstructing the senate judiciary
committee's investigation of it:

The Honorable George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

For the last several months, I have been seeking the voluntary cooperation of the White House with the efforts of the Senate Judiciary Committee to get to the bottom of the scandal surrounding the firing of so many of the United States Attorneys you had appointed. If, as the testimony has indicated, this is about extending improper political influence into our justice system and then misleading Congress and the American people about that political corruption of law enforcement, I hope you would agree this is a grave matter.

The accumulated evidence shows that the list of those to be fired was compiled based on input from the political ranks in the White House and that the reasons publicly given for these firings were contrived as part of a cover up. Recently during his sworn testimony, Attorney General Gonzales himself contrasted these politically-motivated firings with the replacement of other United States Attorneys for "legitimate cause."

I have sent numerous letters to your White House counsel to no avail. For example, in a May 16 letter to Fred Fielding I outlined some of the indications of Karl Rove’s involvement. Yet, all of my good faith efforts have been rebuffed. The stonewalling leaves me and the Senate Judiciary Committee with few options other than considering citations for contempt of Congress against those who have refused to provide relevant testimony and documents to the Congress.

Senator Specter has urged me to write to you directly and suggest that we sit down together to work out our differences with respect to this matter. That is the purpose of this letter.

Respectfully,

1. Do you think Specter will back up Leahy
in a face to face meeting of Bush, or will he stab Leahy in the back and side with Bush's stonewalling?

4. WELL OF ALL THE NERVE,
to question if Senator SmokeScreen would stab Senator Leahy in the back and side with * and his stonewalling..:sarcasm: You should know beyond any doubt that HE WILL! Specter always talks tough but when it time to vote or act on what he says he suddenly reverts back to the Bu$h rubber stamp he has always been.

2. I doubt that Busholini will accept this request.
If he does, I doubt that anything will be resolved unless Leahy caves to the Busholini demand to drop the "Witch Hunt", er I mean, Investigation. I see only one solution: Inherent Contempt Charges of Josh Bolton, Ms Meirs & Karl Rove.

7. If they ignore this letter Specter will have no choice but to go along with contempt
Think about it, where does this leave Specter? If the White house simply renews it demand for no hearing at all, which Leahy apparently will not accept, then Specter will be forced to join in the Contempt citation and if he goes that way how many other Republican Senators will feel obliged to follow their senior leadership from the Judiciary Committee?

One step closer to impeachment or resignation.

8. Thanks for this answer
I hope that this does paint Specter into a corner about this. So you see no wiggle room for Arlen on this? You think he is sincere? I was afraid he was up to some sabotage where he and Bush would double team Leahy.

10. Unless the White House relents I don't see where else it can go
I'm sure they will gang up on Leahy and I'm also sure he knows it going in, but if he was going to cave on the White House demands he could have done that without going to see Bush. Somethings gotta give for there to be a meeting. Leahy can't back down because not only are the White House Demands are absurd, but he's already said, quite publicly, that he would not accept them.

14. Baloney. Is there anything in writing? Specter disdained Gonzo before
he said he was A-OK. Specter is a worse flip-flopper than weathervane McCain.

9. Bush will either completely ignore the request, or make some
snarky, asshole remark in response.

13. Leahy to Bush: "the reasons publicly given for these firings were contrived as part of a cover up."
I wonder if Bush is quoting Cheney!

"GFY" is the response I expect from these guys.
