1. Someone last week said that their vet
recommended gatorade over ice for their dog.

We did it last week after we walked the dogs and they not only seemed to like it, but it did keep them very well hydrated.

24. My 2 dogs went from being sick to healthy within hours after the Gatorade over ice
I give them some every day and they have been fine ever since I began giving it to them.

Any flavor. They love the stuff. They will actually fight over it. And they won't even fight over their food. Strange.

7. Sometimes yes but our doggies are fixed up well. I have a mist cooling
system under a shade tree plus a fan set up for them. :-)

18. It's not possible for me to have my dog inside while I'm gone, but
she has lots of shade, lots of water and she has found a spot under the deck to lay that must be very comfortable for her. When she greets me in the evening, her fur feels as cool as if she was laying in front of the A/C. This has been true even the last few days when our temps have been over 100.

22. Not really.
Most canines handle heat very well so long as they have plenty of water and shade. Dogs are just pretty wolves, and wolves are adapted to survive in desert environments just fine. They will instinctively seek a dark, shady place during the hottest part of the day and will just sleep until it cools off. 105 degree summer temps are the norm where I live, and I've never heard of anyone losing a dog to heatstroke if they've taken a few simple precautions.

Just keep in mind that your dogs will need a LOT more water than normal, so if you'll be leaving them outside in the heat, get a bigger water bowl. It's also important to verify that the water dish won't be exposed to direct sunlight during the day. Dogs don't like drinking hot, stale water any more than you do.

That means my swamp cooler (evaporative cooler for those outside the West) on high and a vornado high speed fan aimed right at her! Leave her outside? Pffush... no way.

2 More Heat Wave Deaths in Memphis

By BETH RUCKER (Associated Press Writer)

From Associated Press

August 14, 2007 1:28 PM EDT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Two more deaths in the Memphis area have been linked to high temperatures,
bringing the heat wave death toll there to five, officials said Tuesday.

The temperature in Memphis rose to at least 100 degrees again Tuesday, the
fifth consecutive day of triple-digit highs, as hot air blanketed the south
-central portion of the nation. Monday's top reading in the city was 105.

"This is unusual. Last summer we had two (heat-related deaths) all summer.
This is five deaths over a six-day period," Shelby County Medical Examiner
Karen E. Chancellor said.

The latest two deaths were a 75-year-old man found in a home with no air
conditioning and a 77-year-old woman found in her back yard where she apparently
had been gardening, Chancellor said. Both were found Monday.

The National Weather Service predicts Memphis temperatures will rise beyond
the century mark through Friday.

Temperatures were in the 90s at midday Tuesday from the western Plains to the
East Coast, with scattering readings of 100. On Monday, thermometers registered
above 100 in parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, Nebraska and Kansas, the weather
service said.

South Carolina and Missouri have each reported one heat-related death, and Illinois
blamed three deaths on the heat since Thursday. Kentucky officials said the heat may
have been to blame for one death, but that had not yet been confirmed.

---------------

I think MA is the coolest state in the nation right now, today. It's been
in the 70's all day here and no humidity. But the heat returns in the am! :(

16. Throwing ice cubes to the dog...
Beats me...she just likes catching them, licking them and leaving them on the carpet...but she is fine...and when I go grocery shopping, I am bringing a notepad because someone will have left a dog in their car...I am notorious for leaving notes to idiots who leave dogs in cars.

for that.

By the time the dumbshits read the note, the pet could be dead.

I will guarantee that, when I reach the market, there will be at least three SUVs with dogs locked inside. Do people have no sense whatsoever? (No need to reply to that question.) Keep dialing 911 and good for you. Really, very good for you.

19. 102 here in Overland Park, KS
according to my house thermometer.

We have a cat who came to live with us last summer in a heat wave. She simply showed up one day, thin and flea-infested and refused to leave. So we took her in. She LOVES being outside in the heat and I have to pick her up and put her back inside or she'd stay out there until, I dunno, she got heat stroke maybe.

I have always hated hot weather.

Her dog can get in and out of it to get wet and cool off. Those pools cost about $10 - money well spent as far as I'm concerned!!

30. Our neighbor's cat comes to our house for water and food
We keep our pet indoors this kind of weather; but are reluctant to bring the neighbor's pet in; so we put fresh water out on our deck real often; and lately, we've been feeding the poor little soul.
We think the neighbor just has a cat to catch mice out of his old barn; that should be outlawed; there's just no way that cat can catch enough mouse to sustain itself. By the way, we don't say
anything to our neighbor because he's unfriendly, and calls the police if anyone says anything to him. Police go there, but he never conforms to rules.

40. 109F in Loretto TN 80 miles south of Nashville today. 107 a record for Florence, AL.
The outside dogs are inside, by their own volition, for a week now! One who doesn't like to be inside, was the first to burst thru the door when I let the housedog out for her morning potty and walk last week!

They come and go, mainly to the creek where they sit in the water. Unfortunately, the water is not that cool to me at all! To top things off here in the Tennessee Valley, we have a significant 100 year drought underway and the golden rod blooming and dust from road work clogging one's sinuses, if you are brave enough to go outside in it without barfing. My 90 year old grandmother was inside all morning and then she literally fell down from the heat when she opened the door and skinned her arm when she caught herself with her hands when she fell.

This is Day 8 of 100+ for us here. . . and the power has flickered or gone out for a second or two three times, but I think once was when a reactor scrammed at Browns Ferry nuke plant, no idea about the other times.
