What is wrong with those people?

from http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/T/TOY_RECALL?SITE=NVLAS&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Days after the Fisher-Price recall, Chinese officials temporarily banned the toys' manufacturer, Lee Der Industrial Co., from exporting products. A Lee Der co-owner, Cheung Shu-hung, committed suicide at a warehouse over the weekend, apparently by hanging himself, a state-run newspaper reported Monday.

12. I'm not sure that's obvious at all
I mean their cuisine is tops, and honk kong cinema is kick ass. I mean our culture does have some nice things about it (Duke Ellington for example) but to say we are far superior, well I'm just not sure that's true.

19. That's an enlightened statement, oh progressive one.
In his culture, he was "shamed" into killing himself. In our culture, the CEO would have walked with a $200M severance bonus. "Shame" is a concept that is dead in this country - and that is what is truly phucked up.

5. WTO, Mattel, Fisher Price & Corporate Greed!!
:grr:

If I had little kids, I'd be looking for wooden toys this holiday season!

And I wouldn't buy anything that says, "Made in China".

Or is it just when foreign products are recalled?

question other cultures? IMO, we should take a few lessons.

15. It's also partly "saving face".
There are still lots of Chinamen who believe in the old ways and saving face was a biggie. If they disgraced them self, then they disgraced their family too. It was required to take their own life. Yeah, this is more modern times and they've abandoned a lot of their ancient practices (some too heinous to think about) but there are still the ones that adhere to some.

17. Bad product/recall = Suicide??
well, the Chinese put high value in personal honor, but obviously not so much in self-compassion and forgiveness. :(

It's sad, but who are we to judge?

23. No health care=Suicide
I had a relative who committed suicide because he was in ill health and couldn't afford treatment (this was before Medicare), and he didn't want to be a financial burdon to his family. So in each culture there are reasons people do this sort of thing.

27. A DU thread up now claims 3% of soldiers in Iraq are committing suicide

Any comments about OUR fucked up culture? One Chinese guy offs himself and you disparage the whole culture? We have hundreds of our military killing themselves.

How dare you?

What is wrong with us, indeed.

30. What is wrong with YOU? "Those people"?!? Nice classic racist catch phrase.
Your post is disgusting. You take the unfortunate story of ONE man's suicide, and leap to a generalization about "those people".

That's not "progressive", that's just plain racist. Shame on you.
