Christian Frat Sues University Of Florida
Christian Frat Sues University Of Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A Christian fraternity has sued the University of Florida, claiming the university discriminates against it by refusing to recognize the fraternity as a registered student group, according to WJXT-TV.

University officials have told Beta Upsilon Chi that it can't be registered on campus because only men are allowed to join, which amounts to prohibited sex discrimination, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Gainesville.

BYX, which has 21 chapters at colleges across the United States, claims the university allows other single-sex fraternities such as Progressive Black Men and Women's Choral.

Beta Upsilon Chi claims in the lawsuit that the university will not allow it on campus because the rules governing UF's Greek system bar religious discrimination. The fraternity requires its members to be Christians.

4. How many mixed sex Fraternities are you aware of....
it looks like the school is wrong on this one....

Fraternities- Male
Sororities - Female...

Schools and other organizations have to be careful with cases like this...because just on the surface it looks like discrimination even though they may have other reasons to deny the organization.

9. TV station waited until now to report on this?
Previous Post July 13, 2007

As a fraternity they cannot solicit funds from the University.
As a service organization they can.

They can operate as a service organization. It might be that they can't because there already is a christian organization. Just as they probably only allow 1 Jewish organization or 1 Muslim organization, 1 Chess Club, etc.

Unless there is something else they are totally out of luck.
