with older relatives - alot of relatives... and almost to a tee there was a moment of bringing up US politics (ala is there really public support for Bush?) and a lamentation that the "rugged individualism" sense of US politics and economics was seeping into the cultural and political culture and a great concern for what that might mean in the future of their country. It really caught my (and my mother's) notice, given how frequently we heard that lament from folks who were not in regular contact with one another and lived in very different sectors of the countries economy (as in, we were not picking up a form of group think of a small sector of the country).

Point being, even in the very progressive European countries there are currents that are moving backwards both politically and economically. Granted we didn't hear a word of anything so disgustingly regressive as those of the Italian politician.
