Sorta sudden that Rove resignation ...
Just how many of you would have thought, yesterday, that you'd be reading and posting about Rover's departure, today?

I don't think anyone expected this event.

"Target letter" from Fitzgerald ... perhaps?

Interesting ...

3. Why would he leave? That makes no sense. He has MORE protection
as an employee of the president, really. Everything is Executive Priv, he can hold them at arm's length.

He can try using the "Prez gave me a letter saying don't talk" excuse. That won't last forever, though.

I think maybe he's looking way downstream, and wants to spend time with his...defense team.

He might be wanting to bring things to a head NOW, so that he can get that pardon after November of next year.

If he takes the fall for anything and EVERYTHING, now, while Bush is still in office, then Bush can give him a get out of jail free card, and every other nefarious actor in the BushCo admin stays protected.

It's bitter, nasty, genius, if that's how he's playing it.

15. That was my first thought...
If they go after him now and he's found guilty Bush will just hand out one of those handy dandy pardons but if he stays in there and then they go after him after the democrats take back the white house he's screwed because who would give him that lovely pardon? The whole damn bunch of them make me sick. :puke:

24. Yep--the old "sacrificial antelope" ploy
The predators are circling, someone's gonna get torn limb from limb, so Karl volunteers to run like hell so he'll be their focus and their target!

The predators chase after him, drag him to the ground, and viciously sink their teeth into him...but their good meal is short lived, because the Monkey King, who rules over the antelopes, waves his magic wand and restores Karl the Runner to full health and life, just as the story is ending.

It is vomitous, I concur. But it would not surprise me if that's the damned game plan. Hell, he'll probably take the blame for Gonzo, too!

4. Yeppir, I was shocked.
Thought we'd never get rid of that dingleberry! Sure, I certainly believe there is MUCH more to the story, maybe we will know pretty soon, maybe we won't. But you'd think if he was the genius he's supposed to be, he would have come up with something more original for the reason for leaving. " To spend more time with family...blah,blah," Do they really think we swallow that malarchy?

7. Here's what I'm thinking: he knows he's on a sinking ship.
And when the Sprt. Iraq report comes out, it will be obvious to everyone. If the report is positive (and it will probably be) it will lie in the face of all the facts and the country will accept NO SPIN whatsoever. ("You can fool most of the poeple some of the time . . ." but you can't fool most of them for too long, even if they are Republicans.

Rove KNOWS there is no convincing way to spin what continually doesn't happen (formation of a stable and inclusive Iraqi government, reduced sectarian strife, a quelled al Qaeda) into a "glorious" or even a "good" accomplishment in the fact of the factswhat's been accomplished (4,000 American deaths, billions of Ammerican dollars lost, wounded and dead Iraqis, American GI's disabled, dispossessed, loss of ben Laden).

One more glowing or even positive picture of the effect of US involvement in the face of opposite facts (Aug.'s death toll) will set the public squarely (90%) against the administration.

So he cooked the story of the Chief of Staff telling everyone in a administration that they'd be expected to remain to the end of the presidency if they stayed past Labor Day. Or maybe he even had the Chief of Staff do it with everyone to cover his hide.

So, blame it on the Chief of Staff with that little story, and sail away. Or rather sneak off the sinking ship, rat that he is. And he knows it a sinking ship, wan will be obviously so from Sept. on. (Reducing his credibility as he works for other Repugs' campaigns).

What do your think?

Was the Chief of Staff story just a guise so Karl could sneak off a ship he knows to be sinking???

9. And ... NO LEAKS ....
... since when has that happened?

Perhaps Bush, Cheney, Rove et al are beginning to understand the full implications of "inherent contempt" and the fact that no one can pardon treason ...

Everything about this is so totally unlike anything we've seen from Bush and his neoconsters ...

12. Have yet to hear an explanation that adds up;
Evil doesn't go home to spend more time with their families. Karl , like Newt, is dedicated to the 100yrs of right wing dogma and will be the dirty prankster behind the re pub's nomination. Jeb Bush is being mentioned to come to the forefront, but I think W has ruined the Bush name for my lifetime. If I owned Bushes Baked Bean company , I'd put a disclaimer on the label after '08.

lives to fight another day.

Of course, we're at the end of the FY, here. The new FY starts 1 October, so now is as good a time as any. And they'll need to put some other fool in the job and get him or her worked up to handle the gig.

this announcement was definitely not expected. What's more W sought Poppy's advice on the weekend and spilled this to the WSJ reporter who was covering the French President's visit.

20. UL, you don't understand. His family values got the better of his...
...patriotic service to the White House, and he's home holding the hand of his beloved spouse. He may also be clearing brush, in preparaton for his next bonfire for freedom.

"I don't think anyone expected this event." Been spending some time with Condi, by chance?

We shouldn't have expectations. We should just wait patiently for guidance from our glorious leaders.

I hope this helps.

(And I hope like Hell Fitzgerald has risen from his coffin and is haunting Mr. Rove's dreams!)

27. When Waxman said he was unfamiliar with "inherent contempt" ...
... (http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/25571) .... I could not suppress a laugh-out-loud moment ... I suspect that Waxman, along with other Congressional leaders realize that the charges they can bring against Bush, Cheney and others (Rove at the top of the list) include treason ... I suspect Rove will be "on travel," soon ...

35. "..the charges they can bring..." Let us pray that they'll get that show on the road...
...the same road Old Rovie will be traveling. Kind of has the flavor of all those Wild West films where the posse is after the horse thief, and when they "ketch him," by golly they have them a necktie party!

Sorry, the Texan in me is coming to the surface. :) (Not that sorry, either.)

21. maybe
he's leaving to work on the next round of election fraud for the republicans as A private citizen he has even less oversight than he has now. He can work in the shadows ,the place he works best. He can leave the country without telling anyone. Call who he wants to blackmail without fear of being caught. Whisper lies in the ears of media. In other words he can get away with more as A private citizen with his allies than A Whitehouse official who may one day be held accountable. Not holding my breath on the last one.

26. Rove probably told Bush months ago
and waited until something ominous was about to occur:

Maybe Rove is being indicted in a few days?

Maybe Rove is going to work for Fred Thompson?

Maybe the sub-prime mortgage is going to bring down the economy?

Any number of reasons, but there has to be a reason that today was chosen, and not tomorrow, or not at the end of the month.
