Poll question: Do You Own Stocks, Bonds, And/Or Mutual Funds?
It can be in a personal account, IRA, or 401K

1. It would be interesting to break those out
Do you invest your own personal money, do you have some of your compensation in a retirement plan that uses IRA or 401K, or are you out of the market?

7. I have an IRA, but I technically do not own it
I work for a brokerage firm. Every February, I get 20% of my total financial compensation (salary + any bonuses) from the previous year put into an IRA as part of the company's profit sharing plan. Technically, though, it is the legal property of the plan trustees as long as I am employed here, although the money is in a separate account and I can invest it as I want in any of the mutual fund company's funds.

As I said below, the concept of "ownership" with regards to financial securities can be rather vague.

2. Define "owned"
Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 08:30 AM by TechBear_Seattle
A great many people have some form of retirement fund through their employer and receive quarterly statements. They do not, however, have any say in how that money is invested and have no legal ownership until they are fully vested and/or have retired.. Some companies like Boeing have stock sharing programs where employees "receive" stock "on the books" but do not actually gain control of the stocks until they hit retirement age or meet some other list of criteria. Then there is the matter of stock options.

With regards to financial securities, "ownership" is a surprisingly vague concept. :eyes:

5. I See Your Argument
I would define "owned" as getting those little monthly or quarterly reports and getting your money back or what is left of it when you try to withdraw it...

6. Don't Worry
Keynes said "in the long run we will all be dead." I think that was a justification for doing what is necessary to make it through today... I realize that thinking is fraught with problems but it is what it is...

8. Can I ask why?
Just curious or do you have another motive for asking?

9. No Motive
I believe most folks are invested one way or another, either in large measures or small measures, and I was just doing a poll to confirm my "belief"

14. Regular brokerage account, 401k, and two self-directed IRAs
The IRAs are rolled-over former 401ks from previous jobs.
