What is your favorite hare-brained Republican idea?
I like the one when the military had the idea to create a biological weapon that would make enemy soldiers gay. I don't even know what the hell they were thinking. I mean did they just think they'd hit a regiment with their "Gay Bomb" and the soldiers would just immediately look at each other and embrace on a battlefield?

Plus, I'm not so sure creating a whole army of Liza Minelli fans makes them any less dangerous. I doubt they could be stopped!

...which hair on Charles Mansions' head is the most unruly.

It's just so hard to select ONE.

3. "trickle down economy" -- just describing it makes you see how preposterous it was.

"So if we lower taxes on rich people they will then do things that benefit the poorer people with their left-over money!!!"

Um. no -- they will just buy more Maseratis and bigger diamonds.

4. Oh, there are too many to choose from
My top contender is trickle down economics, followed closely by privatization and closely by deregulation.

People have to learn the hard way that none of this stuff is good for anyone but a very few rich people.

I just wish they'd had to learn it either before or after my lifetime.

7. It's hard to pick just ONE ...
... but my personal favourite is the colour-coded terror alert system.

Apparently, just saying that we're at a heightened alert level is meaningless if there isn't a colour associated with it.

And one can only wonder how much 'discussion and effort' (i.e. taxpayer dollars) went into 'developing' this crap. They also could have picked better colours, IMHO - like Mauve, or Indian Russet, or Tangerine.

With all of the money this Admin spends, you'd think they could have at least sprung for the deluxe box of Crayolas, instead of the cheap eight-pack - which doesn't even include a built-in sharpener, for Christ's sake.

Okay, end of unintentional rant ...

12. that their candidates care about them
Republicans in Congress choose party over Country, Corporations over individuals, and care nothing about the very people they actually represent. Yet election after election these voter keep coming back for more false talk about morals, abortion, and low taxes.

16. Because it made those spouting it look unbelievably idiotic.....
"The reason we have so many illegal aliens working in the U.S. is that legal abortions have caused us to have a labor shortage when it comes to low-paying menial jobs."

In the space of a week I heard or read this three times. It was obviously somebody's idea of a really good talking point.

So, apparently it would be a good thing if woman started giving birth to children they don't want in order to provide an exploitable labor pool.

17. SDI...
It all began with Reagan's insanely idiotic idea of stationing giant laser beams in space to blast ICBMs out of the sky. Sounds far-fetched until you see how much money he wants to piss away on it. Lockheed, Boeing, and Raytheon line up to get contracts and bullshit their way through the science.

When it comes time to test the system, it fails. Spectacularly. SO what happens? The US Govt decides to pour more money into it.

Then, after failing a few more tests, the system is in jeopardy of having funding pulled by Congress. So what do the contractors do? What any good American would do: they cheat on the tests. They notify the operators exactly when and where the missile will be launched, where it is targeted, and what the trajectory is. In other words, they rigged the test to maximize the success rate based upon a situation that would never ever ever happen in real life ("Dirty capitalist pig, the day of reckoning has arrived. Vee vill be launching our arsenal of nuclear missiles at you Thursday at 3pm, yes this Thursday, our target is Los Angeles, ok I'll slow down so you can write this down, we will be flying at the following coordinates...").

And they still failed the tests.

So after the Republicans came to power in 1994, they poured more money into the system and decided to launch a propaganda campaign based on the following argument:

"If we hold these rigged tests, we can claim a 7% success ratio. We won't mention that the tests are rigged. Then, we can go on TV and justify the funding based on the argument that if we can just stop 7% of the nukes launched at us, perhaps millions will be saved and the system will appear to be worth it."

And then Bush came into office. Since he doesn't believe in science, he went ahead and decided to deploy the system and tell everyone it works. It still fails the tests under optimum circumstances. But now he is using it to piss off the Russians by placing missile silos in eastern Europe.

Price tag for all this? Around $100 billion by 2009. The biggest individual line item in the Pentagon's budget from 2002-2009, IIRC.
