How big of an asshole is Murray the mine owner? Meeting with relatives...
snip/

Ten miles away in the small town of Huntington, several hundred people filled bleachers at the rodeo grounds Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil.

At one point during a meeting at a school earlier Wednesday with the miners' families, Murray stepped outside, paced around and went back in.

Maria Buenrostro, the sister of trapped miner Manuel Sanchez, said Murray got angry with relatives' questions and walked out. She also said there was no interpreter for three Spanish-speaking families.

"We want the truth, that's all we want," said Buenrostro, 40. "If there's nothing that they can do about it, you know, just tell us so we know what to expect when they bring them out."

Some family members began to voice frustration with the slow rescue operation. The company has rented the local junior high school and secluded relatives there. Murray has advised them not to speak to reporters, and sheriff's deputies are guarding the building.

Maria Buenrostro, whose brother Manuel Sanchez is one of the trapped miners, told the Associated Press that Murray got angry with relatives' questions and walked out of a meeting. She added that there was no interpreter provided for three Spanish-speaking families.

"We want the truth; that's all we want," said Buenrostro. "If there's nothing that they can do about it, you know, just tell us so we know what to expect when they bring them out."

Murray took two relatives down into the mine for an afternoon tour and pledged to distribute bilingual information. "The families are doing incredibly well, given the circumstances," said Rob Moore, a vice president with Murray Energy.Though officials still refuse to release the names of the trapped miners, friends and families began to confirm some identities Wednesday. In addition to Sanchez, relatives confirmed that the group includes Don Erickson and Kerry Allred.

2. I was thinking the same thing.
I hope the miners live, and I hope he loses everything he's accumulated.

What a jerk.

3. Another Robber Baron
Are the police guards there to keep the families in or the press out? or both?

If I were one of those families, I'd be at my wit's end right now, not knowing the fate of my miner, and with the sheer gall of Murray.

He'd be wise to get a body guard.

4. That's a question I had.
I would guess a little of both--both to keep them in and to keep the press out.

I would guess that local law enforcement looks out for him.

6. Heh. Of course
I'm sure he pays a pretty penny for private protection.

I heard on NPR yesterday that that mine has had something like 300 safety violations just in the last year or so. Unbelievable that it wasn't shut down. Things that make you go Hmmmm...

10. What's the point of OSHA if...
it's not going to do anything about these violations.

I worked as a contractor for KBR at Texas Eastman back in the 90s. We had to go through extensive training in OSHA regulations. Eastman officials put the fear of OSHA into us.

What's changed (or should I ask)?

13. My jaw dropped...
when he said that "We're doing our best to recover from this natural disaster."

Contessa gave him a free pass. He's still blaming this on an earthquake, even though all agencies have said that the only seismic activity was the actual mine collapse.

He doesn't give a shit about those miners or their families...he's only worried about his $$$.

11. Dancing like hell to blame it on his God
Conveinient of him to leave it up to his all powerful creator. The same God that these families are no doubt praying to as we speak.

retreat mining is not natural, boss, but it turned out to be a disaster

19. Good.
I haven't kept up with all of this guy's appearances and statements since the collapse; nor have I kept up with his history.

But I'd love to see them in one thread, so that we all can access them as more emerges.

The guy is brainless. I often wonder how true idiots become wealthy...not inherited wealth, but "achieved" wealth.

26. What a shining example of corporate leadership
Edited on Thu Aug-09-07 09:17 AM by Canuckistanian
One of the reasons (so we're told) for the astronomical salaries of top executives is because of the great responsibility that they're burdened with.

This guy has been doing nothing but downplaying the disaster, blaming others, putting on bizarre press conferences and insulting victim's families.

He's the poster boy for what's wrong in America.
