Telluride impeachment vote reaps storm
By Nancy Lofholm
Denver Post Staff Writer

Moonbats. Lunatics. Boobs. Bong smokers. Left-bots.

Those insults and more are being heaped on the populace of Telluride after the Telluride Town Council became the first in Colorado to vote for an ordinance to impeach President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

In a country where a July poll found as many as 46 percent of Americans favor impeachment, Neil Young is singing "Let's Impeach the President," and online stores are selling "impeach" baby bibs, wall clocks and doggie shirts, Telluride is getting hit with a surprising amount of anti-impeachment venom.

"This kind of backlash? I don't know of it happening anywhere else," said David Swanson, Washington, D.C., director of Impeach PAC, a group that now lists more than 180 entities across the country that have passed impeachment measures.

"Since the right-wing letter- writing campaign started, support in the community (for the impeachment ordinance) has grown," said Thom Carne vale, the Telluride resident who began the impeachment drive.

Carnevale needed 31 signatures, but collected about 100 in several hours in downtown Telluride. The petition left the council of this home-rule town with two choices: pass the measure or take it to a vote in November.

1. Ain't that "Gunny Bob" territory out there.
Boy that guy is a true nutcase. I get him out here at night and am always amazed at the lies and distortions he can get away with.

3. We were just up there last wknd. My hubby got in a fight with a Pukkke
over the impeachment issue.

Telluride is a divided town. Literally. The rich folk (Republicans) live up in the Mountain Village, looking down on the peasants in The Town of Telluride like lords. We were there for the jazz festival, and the outdoor audience is divided by a fence right down the middle, even down the middle of the dance floor ! Rich patrons who pay $600 per ticket on one side, ordinary plebes who only pay 60 per day on the other. Rich folk sit/"dance" on one side, everybody else on the other. We felt sorry for the rich couples, who had to expose their lack of dance ability in the VERY sparse dance crowd on their side, rather than hide among the throngs of happy boogy-ers on our side and have a decent time. It is surreal, believe me!

We had forgotten about the impeachment thing, so were surprised by the volatility of the situation. The Pukkke guy my hubby was arguing with was all pissed at the audacity of the Town to give everyone in Mountain Village a bad name. He said Shrub should stop all this impeachment nonsense by cutting off Telluride funds!

Hubby laughed and said, Excuse me, Congress hands out the funds, not the president. And if he did, that would be just the sort of abuse of power that he should get impeached for.

Cigar smoking Pukkke harumphs and slinks away. I bet he's been getting that a lot!

Hooray for Telluride! Impeach Now!~

4. Keep Those Letters Coming
"Since the right-wing letter- writing campaign started, support in the community (for the impeachment ordinance) has grown," said Thom Carne vale, the Telluride resident who began the impeachment drive.

What a change. politicians who listen:

"We would never have dreamed this up on our own, but we're proud to respond to our electorate," said council member Andrea Benda, who has no plans to change her vote in the face of controversy.
