Shit, even most credit card companies are charging a 3% or so foreign currency exchange fee - which is total fokkin' bullshit since it's all done electronically! Last I checked, CapitalOne was one of the few NOT doing this.

I bought $200 US last week and paid $217 CDN. Same amount 3 years ago was almost $270 CDN.

You will get the best exchange rate that way. With the currency exchange fees on cash right now, it will be much more ugly.

Cash fees you can understand, but they shouldn't be too high. But w/ a credit card it's all done electronically, at no expense to the credit card company. These fees have cropped up just in the past few years. Your advice certainly used to be true, but it's best to check the fine print on your credit card - or ask them. As of 6 -12 mos. ago, CapitalOne was one of the few that hasn't instituted this sneaky fee. That may have changed.
