1. Rep Adam Smith's response to my phone call and letter:

Dear ____,

Thank you for contacting me in support of the impeachment of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. I appreciated hearing from you.

The actions of Attorney General Gonzales have proven he is not up to the job. As a result, I have co-sponsored a resolution (H.Res.417) that expresses no confidence in the Attorney General's performance and calls for his resignation. I am troubled by his inconsistent testimony before Congress, his firing of U.S. attorneys, and his involvement in warrantless wiretapping.

On July 31, Rep. Jay Inslee introduced a resolution (H.Res.589) that directs the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether Mr. Gonzales should be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors. I think this proposal warrants serious consideration. Impeachment is a major step and one I do not take lightly, but this is an extreme case, and I will consider it. I will listen to my constituents over the August district work period and will make a decision in September over whether to co-sponsor Rep. Inslee's resolution.
