Vanishes from the peoples minds , you know it will like everything else , it's only a matter of time , this is what I believe .

1. A few weeks
People still talk about Katrina, but nothing is being done about it. And what about the power grid? Remember the big blackout in the Northeast in 2003? Everyone was talking about fixing that too.

2. The problem is that tragedies will still happen regarding
the infrastructure of the nation. Infrastructure has been low on the political radar but the longer it is neglected the more something will have to done about it. :dem:

3. We're long overdue for a celebrity blitz

A marriage, a new baby, something, anything that the news can run off to cover.

10. Yeah, I forgot about that one.

I'm sure there's been 2 or 3 over the last few months, but the press is waiting for another tropical island to follow the story.

Missing in Omaha? Nah.
Northern Alabama? Nah.

Jamaica? We are SO there.

5. I believe we have more to fear from decrepit
infrastucture than any outside terrorist threat. And if this country decided to fix America first, we could put half the country back to work tomorrow, re-invigorate our domestic steel production and a host of other industries. If we only had the leadership with the vision.

6. Didn't Roosevelt do that during the Depression? We have a beautiful highway in CT
called the Merritt Parkway built during that time. The overpass bridges are done in various Art Deco styles and the Parkway is one of the nicest drives in the NE because of them and all the trees. No lighting for night time but then you can switch to I95 (if you can stand the Bridgeport section).

7. Very true , If we only have a brain
But bush is protecting us here from terrorists . Even though this cost more than actually keeping our country glued together and alot more infrastructure failures to come soon to your and my town or city .

I have been in a few of these parking structures where as a car passes by the entire floor shakes , talk about waitng for the building to collapse from stress like this bridge did and these parking structures were built for lighter cars not big SUV's that roll in there .

13. Nothing will be done until three or four more tragedies occur.
They will occur.

11. Perhaps longer than you think.
I hope that the American people are smart enough to realize that Bush's namely, the expense of paying for it, is partly responsible for the lack of resources put into things like infrastructure maintenance.

15. I think all non-profits and the government should be forced
to fully fund depreciation. That comes right after customs and defense (for the federal government), and first for just about all others.

I got a non-profit I was with to do that--it's one of the few things the consultant and I agreed on with no quibbles; the CEO thought it a great idea, and the school that could threaten to take over the non-profit liked it. Then the fiscal impact hit home and all the groups that were used to funding from the non-profit realized there'd be no money at all for years.

I remember when I was a teenager reading Time magazine back in the '70s; even then there were complaints about unfunded infrastructure repair/replacement.

* doesn't get a pass, nor does Clinton, nor Bush I, nor Reagan, nor Ford, nor Carter. Neither does the Minnesota government now or 20 years ago. New stadium, sure; increased subsidies for this or that, sure. Making sure the bridges don't collapse, well, maybe next administration.

16. In my town,
our current mayor has been hard at work getting work done on our infrastructure that has needed to be done for years. I am sure that it is costing more to get it done now than it would have done if it had been done properly all along.

18. What I worry about is the nutters screaming that the Govt can't do it...
...so it's time to move over and let private enterprise have its turn. Anyone willing to bet that the idea of rebuilding as a toll bridge is at least floated? And will repair/replacement projects in the future be funded with tollbooths erected by private enterprise?
