A "stolen" vote in Congress? Democrats OK investigation
By Jonathan Weisman and Elizabeth Williamson

The Washington Post

BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI / GETTY IMAGES

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., take questions Friday during a news conference on Capitol Hill.
WASHINGTON — The House late Friday unanimously agreed to create a special select committee, with subpoena powers, to investigate Republican allegations that Democratic leaders had "stolen" a victory on a parliamentary vote.

The move capped a remarkable day: Republicans marching out of the House in protest near midnight Thursday, and partisan bickering dashed Democratic hopes for a final legislative rush. A temporary blackout of the chamber's vote-tally board led to accusations of skulduggery.

While Democratic leaders hoped to leave for their August recess on a wave of legislative successes, the House instead slowed to an acrimonious crawl that threatened to stretch the legislative session into next week.

The agreement to form a special committee was extraordinary. Such powerful investigative committees usually are reserved for issues such as the Watergate scandal and the funneling of profits from Iranian weapons sales to the Nicaraguan contras in the 1980s.

3. Democrats never back down from a chance to let the republicans steamroll them.
You watch. They'll impeach a democratic member, and yet we can't open impeachment proceedings against gonzo, bush, and cheney.

9. I am sick and tired of hearing these people whining...
about that vote. They seem to be having amnesia about what was going on for the past six years when, they took the gavel, made Dems hold meetings in the basement, held open votes and now they want to cry. They had their callers out in force calling cspan this morning with this garbage. They are counting on people who are just now paying attention to believe this shit.

It is our job to let them know all of the dirty tricks they pulled. Now, they want to say that the Dems said that they would end corruption so they are wrong about any issue and they are digging,.So I guess that because the Dems said that that means that Repugs can continue on with their dirt. I am listening to a local station right now and the guy on her is whining like this vote was the end of the world.

10. The ONLY reason Hoyer agreed to an investigation is because the display screen wasn't registering
the votes AS THEY WERE MADE and it wasn't McNulty's fault (chairing at the time it happened) OR the Dems fault. The repukes are just milking this for all it's worth. It will go NOWHERE. The committee will be 3 Dems and 3 repukes. It's a complete waste of time, money and effort.

11. This is going to be the shortest investigation ever
because the whole thing is on tape, right?

What a massive waste of time.

13. yes and Hoyer reviewed that tape BEFORE he agreed to the idiotic investigation.
When he was on the floor yesterday he went through each thing McNulty did and didn't do, each thing McNulty said, what was showing on the display and when, what was showing on the screen on the repuke side of the aisle and what was on the screen on the Democrat's side of the aisle. He explained exactly what went down that night. Yes, it's on tape and Hoyer has reviewed that tape which is why he accepted the resolution. He KNOWS the Dems did nothing wrong or he never would have agreed to it.:) It should be the shortest investigation ever (what? 30 minutes?), but you know repukes.....they will drag it out as long as they possibly can.
