Az-Zaman confirmed today that the ministers of the Sunni-led Iraqi Accord Front (IAF) have indeed left the government. The paper related, quoting IAF parliamentarian Zhafir al-'Ani that “the resignations of all of all IAF ministers have been submitted ... except for that of vice-Prime Minister Salam Zawba'i due to his presence abroad, but he tendered (his resignation) through e-mail.”

Pan-Arab al-Hayat reported that the IAF leader, 'Adnan al-Dulaimi, threatened to “expose the sectarian policies of the government, especially the implication of security agencies ... and armed militias in the execution of (sectarian) killings and expulsions and the destruction of Sunni mosques.” Al-Dulaimi told the paper that his front decided to abandon the cabinet because Maliki “makes his decisions alone, without consulting the other parties ... while he claims that his decisions represent everyone.” Al-Dulaimi added that the Prime Minister “did not open any communication channels (with the IAF) in order to begin a dialogue.”
Similarly, Az-Zaman headlined “The IAF: al-Maliki is concerned with Bush’s support and doesn’t care about the national interest.” The paper quoted an IAF leader, Zhafir al-'Ani, who confirmed that no negotiations are currently ongoing to return the Sunni front to the cabinet. Commenting on statements by US officials criticizing the IAF pullout and calling it “a political maneuver,” al-'Ani said “we believe that this assumption relates to conflicts in American party politics, and we are not concerned with the extent of Bush’s approval of IAF decisions.”
