McCaskill: Freshman Senators Serve As Washington Clean-Up Crew
From McCaskill for Missouri e-mail:

Missourians voted for change in November. The main reason was to clean up Washington. I was honored to be hired by the people as part of the custodial crew to get it done.

In early January, the Senate overwhelmingly passed our version of the ethics bill - our number one priority for delivering real change to the American people. Since then, Republican stalling tactics have kept these important reform measures from moving forward...

Last week, I joined the eight other Democratic Freshmen Senators at a press conference to urge action. We were elected to clean up Washington and it was time to make it happen.

This week, we passed the most sweeping ethics reform our country has seen since Watergate.

The key ethics reform measures will:

Ban members of Congress and their staff from accepting gifts and trips from lobbyists

Put an end to corporate-paid jet travel for members of Congress

Require disclosure of "bundled" campaign checks from lobbyists

Stop the "revolving door" by forcing Senators to wait two years to lobby Congress and one year for staff

Make it easier for the public to track earmarks by requiring all earmarks to appear on the Internet 48 hours before Senate action

Allow Senators to raise objections to earmarks added in secret session

Missourians sent me to Washington with a broom and dust pan in my hand and an assignment to get to work. I’m honored to look at this legislation and know that this is a clean-up job the people of my great state will be proud of. I thank them for believing that together we could make it happen.

Sincerely,

Claire McCaskill
